Do I have variable dampers?

Sorry but I need to confirm this before I pull the trigger.

I just bought 2011 520d with sports auto transmission.
So it has comfort, normal, sports and sport plus button.
but nothing like comfort plus or eco pro.

Does that mean, my dampers / shocks are standard ones?

I hope they are standard

Comfort mode at that age indicates VDC is fitted. Still best to use the VIN number in a VIN checker site, to read the full spec'.

BTW, don't you want VDC?

Vo does not show vdc or anything.
I do not want vdc
Happy with standard suspension so I can work on it with ac schnitzer or eibach springs.

You can still change the springs even if the car has vdc.

BMW like to make simple things very complex. Dampers can be managed separately of transmission depending on what option list you have, the words "adaptive, variable, dynamic" replace each other in different generations and pre- post-restyle models, making even more confusion. I would suggest you take VIN number and find out the option list for better understanding of what exactly you have. The make year 2011 is the pre-restyle one same as mine, so pay attention to this, too.
Variable dampers will not prevent you of using favorite springs, because dampers make the struts stiff-soft while springs make it high-low. No problem here. And for reference you may want to read a couple of threads where experienced members are still discussing BMW terminology linked to your topic:

Thanks guys.
Collected the car today.
It has normal, sport and sport plus switch only.
And my vo does not suggest anything closer to 'dampers' thingy.
I am on phone so will read the thread later.
Thanks again.

Definitely sorted... no VDC.

Keep us posted on your opinions of the car.

Thanks for confirmation. I have ordered Eibach pro springs after reading plenty of threads on ACS, Eibach and HR.

As some of us have moved from E9x platform and we all had 6 pots at some stage (so some of you still have 6 pot F1X). But here is my initial impression about F10 520d.

-Its miles ahead of 320d. There is no comparison of two cars. 520d is refined, quiet and build quality is at another level.
-I had 330d remapped. So, 520d is bit flat and dull UNLESS you click sport / sport plus and move the shifter to sports mode. It does transform the car (as you mentioned earlier). Car becomes more responsive and car is totally different animal. Honestly, I did not feel that I was driving 4 cylinder diesel car.
-8 speed sports auto is MUST IMHO in these cars. What a brilliant kit and car becomes so smooth.
- It is very economical. Car had half tank and I have done 200 plus miles and trip meter is showing 175 miles remaining. I think realistically, I can get 500miles per tank if its mostly motorway driving.
-Exterior is very subtle and most 3 series and other drivers take 5 series bit easy. I have some cosmetic modifications planned for my car to give it aggressive look (some may not like those).

I am looking for 20 inch wheels for 5 series and struggling to find a decent pair. Anything decent is 1000 plus

Thanks to all of you who helped me to choose the right car.

Guys
Are there any forums where I can see what is 'for sale'?
Something like what we have 'classified section' on 3 series forums.

If it's mostly motorway driving and your staying below license losing territory, you'll get 700+ out of the tank as long as you don't bury the throttle at every opportunity. I've just ticked over 26k in my first year, mostly motorways and I generally see between 650 and 750 a tank

Of course it is - the tyres alone cost that. You are not going to find a decent set of quality 20" wheels and half decent tyres for 'cheap'.

+1

Your looking at a minimum of £2k for a decent set of wheels and tyres, more if you stick to run flats. Don't bother with cheap 20" wheels, you might be able to get away with 18" cheap wheels but at 20" they will crack... a few of my friends learnt this at considerable cost

I was getting 400-450 out of remapped 330d.
I travel on m25 most of the time and traffic is variable and hence MPG can vary depending on the traffic. If I get 600miles per tank, I will be more than happy.

I should have used 'wheels only' word.

Anything which is decent is nearly a grand. I have not looked at the rubber yet as that would be next target. Summer is far away so I can get 'half decent' rubber in time.

Hmmm interesting. I had Ispiri ISR10 on my 330d and they were 19.

I will stick with CM wheels as they sell quality wheels.

Shortlisted wheels so far:

M359

or
OEMS Stance SC7

Now my car is Grey so I will have to stick with silver colour.

Thanks.

Looking at the AG M359 I would recommend to also have a look at the VMR wheels http://www.velocitymotoring.com/vmr-wheels/ as having quite similar classic designs in their collection, comparable quality and close price tag. And a couple of shops in your area http://www.ca-automotive.co.uk/installers.html.
Hope, more choice is better
