F10 5-series Night Vision Technology In Action
The 2011 F10 5-series is available with BMW Night Vision option, part of BMW ConnectedDrive, allowing F10 owners to see objects in the dark up to 900 feet ahead of the vehicle. This is the first video we have seen of it in action in the F10.
Info from BMW: BMW Night Vision, part of BMW ConnectedDrive, can see in the dark and warns the driver of any approaching danger that is located outside of the range of the headlights. An infrared camera positioned behind the kidneys reveals objects up to 900 feet ahead of the vehicle. Pedestrians and cyclists are identified and highlighted on the Control Display. Three processors simultaneously calculate all movements outside of the vehicle and the course of the BMW 5 Series Sedan. Should the system detect any danger of a collision, the driver receives a warning on the Control Display or on the Head-Up Display in the form of an icon that shows the position of the person outside of the vehicle.

At first I thought to myself that doesn't look like Germany. Then I heard the driver's accent and I realised he is Swiss! lol Neat system though. In ten years I bet every new car will have this.

It would be cool to see how this thing points out wildlife down a dark highway.
I think this feature will be used to avoid wildlife more than anything else (Deers, skunks, ect...) |

except its lower than your field of vision, so it wouldn't be a good idea to stare at the screen while driving anyway

Last winter, my wife crashed the e92 head-on into a young deer, doing about 100 km/h on a dark rural road. She worked the brakes hard but the speed on impact was still 40-50 km/h.
The front of the car was destroyed and we were lucky to walk away unscathed. I guess it makes you think what if the deer was a real big one? You could easily die in such a collision. So, this night vision option makes sense, especially in the countryside.

Really good point about the novelty factor. I can see the practicality if you frequenty go out of town to a cabin or cottage, and roaming wild life is an issue. Beyond that, and the show n' tell wow factor, is it necessary?

I never understood the usefulness of this until someone once told me that the Russian mafia uses it all the time to drive in dark areas without headlights. Not sure if thats true or not...

Looks like he was right. The Tach goes to 5500 RPM or so. Not many Gasoline powered cars have such low red-lines.

Night vision
I have Night vision installed,
but the alert system does not work. My system recognise a person (body marked yellow) but no warning (yellow triangle) comes up in display. The BMW dealer and Münich technical team have no idea how to fix it. Which I find strange - must be a software problem. Anyone experienced the same? |

Yes mine doesn't recognise people reliably either. My main concern however is the position of the display in the centre of the dash is not in the field of view when driving which renders it next to useless. I also have head up display and if they could project the infra red image on the windscreen then this would be perfect. BMW take note...
