518D 2016 auto gearbox oil change advice needed

Hi
My 2016 518d 8 speed Auto is on 100k miles, no probs but been advised to get the gearbox oil changed. I phoned BMW dealers and they said its a lifetime part so only change if theres a problem, i still got a price though £530 for ATF 3 plus oil and £190 for the filter!.
Can anyone else tell me if I still should change it?
my mechanic is saying it takes ZF6, are these 2 oils the same?
The filter kit is quite expensive and Im wondering do I have to change it?

Thank you

I don’t know if they used a different transmission on the diesels, but both my f10 535 and my F06 b6 have the 8 speed ZF branded automatic transmission. The previous generations used the 6 speed ZF transmission. The ZF 8 speed should use the ZF Lifeguard 8 fluid. I personally wouldn’t run any fluid besides that one specifically, as the price difference between the manufacturers own fluid and some supposed “equivalent” isn’t worth possible issues down the road in my opinion.

If you look at what the manufacturer recommends, I believe it’s something like a fluid and pan/filter change every 60,000 miles or so. I’ve done my 5 series once when I first bought it around 70,000 miles and will be doing it again soon. I believe there are threads on here regarding this discussion if you search.

Some people get away with not touching the transmission, but I’m a believer in swapping the fluid and pan/filter.
