I did find a couple threads on Bimmerfest that detail the exact same issues. Looks like it's all related to 2014 F10s. One person even had BMW buy their car back.

Good news, the issue was finally fixed by replacing the entire navigation unit. No more issues even when in direct sun for extended periods of time.
