f10 550i trunk flies open way too fast

Anyone know how to fix/adjust the trunk on the f10? Mine flies open way too fast and I'm afraid its going to go through the rear windshield lol. Is there a particular spring I need to replace? I've tried to do some research and find mention of return and tension springs in the trunk but I don't know what does what.

Take it to the dealer. That fast is not normal. Stand side by side with another F10 and show them

I purchased the two springs, but didn't put them in my car before selling my car

I had the same symptom as you, and the service guys showed me that the springs' struts were leaking. Each of the springs does have a strut.

Here are the part numbers:
Tension spring, trunk lid/tailgate 51247204366 (goes on the left side)
Return spring, trunk lid, right 51247204367 (goes on the right side)

My dealer gave me his price on these springs, and they still have their shipping tags on them.

Want them? I see from your car's age that it is the same as mine was, and probably not under warranty.

Like mentioned above take it to the dealer especially if you're under warranty. Maybe post a video so we can compare as I'm interested in how fast your trunk is opening

gpan: Your tension spring may be the problem.

Dutt1113: I've replied to your PM.

I am taking my to the dealer next week. Mine is not random. Whether it is footwell button, FOB, CA, or release by License plate, Mine opens a couple inches only and then it feels like I am working against the springs to manually open the rest of the way.

Thanks to this thread i replaced mine in 5 minutes. its amazing that ive dealt with the trunk being hard to close for 2 years now. its amazing how much easier it is to close and how much slower and controlled it is to open now.

no tools need either as its just a metal ball it snaps onto on one end and you slip it over the curved rod on the other.

Picked up the part from ECS Tuning for $52 shipped.

Did you have to take apart the liner? Is it easy?

Only on the right side at the top. There are like three push fasteners you take out and that's it

I only saw two of those push things; something is still blocking the liner from coming off. Did you have to pry it to get it completely off? Or just pull it enough to reach the spring? Hopefully I don't totally f*ck it up

bringing up an old thread but i'm having that issue right now. do both left and right springs have to be replaced? I've seen quite a few post and even a YouTube video but they only mentioned the right side only? sounds like the right side is the return spring but i'm not sure what the left side spring does? hopefully anyone familiar with this can chime in as I need to order this but don't know if I need to order both springs or just the right...thanks!

you can check to what spring needs replacement. I am 100% sure the plastic that holds the spring popped out of place. its different size for left and right.

I just did this repair on Memorial Day. I replaced both springs on my car as I wasn't sure which one was bad and even with buying both, the total price was about $70. Pretty straightforward DIY. Just watch your head once you pop the spring off. Trunk lid took a good bounce off my head after I disengaged each side. Here is the DIY that I followed.
