After 6,500 miles I received an alert that the vehicle was operating at its minimum oil level and that I needed to add 2 qts of oil asap. I did this and then immediately ran the vehicles built in oil level check program and it showed the level at its maximum.
That was 4 weeks ago. I checked it again today and it is down by 25% to 75% of capacity. I've since driven approx 600 miles. There is no sign of leakage in my garage. This is my first BMW. Over the past 20 years I've owned a Benz CLS 550, Infiniti M45 Sport and a Lexus GS 400 and have never seen anything like this. Is this considered normal? Should I be concerned? FYI... I've added a Burger ECU tune and a Dinan exhaust. Both vendors advised that neither product would have any impact upon oil consumption. I do plan to bring it in for BMW service to inspect in the next 10-14 days after just now disconnecting the Burger tune. Thanks for your feedback. |

its normal for all turbo cars to burn oil with in reason on my 2013 550i I had to add oil one time 12k miles. if I was you I would take car back to dealer you may have bad sensor Do not add any more oil you could hurt your engine.
No way you could have bun that much oil in 600 miles.

My 2011 550 goes through about 1 qt a month, I drive about 800-900 miles a month. I've been using liqui moly for about a year and it doesn't seem to matter which brand I use.

My 750 was an oil burner and could chug 1 qt every 3500 miles. Look, these engines have a split personality. You can run them like grandma or you can run it like a race car. Even running like a race car for 20 minutes every day will force this beast to gulp oil. You won't see any leak as it's all in the atmosphere. Sometimes the oil burner cones from driving like a wuss during break in. However, most likely you're driving the car hard a few hours a week and that's all it takes to switch this fuel efficient prissy ergo-health nut-eco pro lovin' Prius clone into a gluttonous road-whore pig of a machine own the twists. It's all good and probably to be expected. |

turbo engines are more prone to burning oil. however...
it is all dependent on how the engine was treated and broken in for the first 3000 miles of its life. unfortunately yours was treated like shit during this period and as a result burns oil. use a good quality 5w40 oil like liqui moly, shell rotella, amsoil, redline, or motul and oil burning will slow. |

Another 7000 miles before a scheduled service. Clearly something to watch.

Definitely normal within reason. I always keep a quart or two in the trunk cubby under the floor panel at the back.
I'm trying to recall my frequency. I've probably added 3 quarts over 15k miles. So about a quart every 5k as a blended average. I do remember there were stints where I went longer though. I can guarantee that my car sees redline everyday I drive it.... multiple times.
