Door Locks Driving Me Nuts!

You would think that having lived with this issue for four years in my recently departed 335i that I would be used to it by now. But my new 535i suffers the same stupid problem: There's no way to unlock all of the doors when the engine turns off or the car is put into "Park". Despite my best attempts to always remember to hit the "Lock/Unlock" button on the dashboard when exiting the car, I continue to forget and when I go to open the back door to get something out, the darn thing is locked! Every other car I've owned for the past fifteen years can be set to unlock all the doors automatically, but for some unknown reason BMW refuses to sign on to this convenient option. Is anyone aware of a way to set the locks up to do what I want? If it's in the owner's manual, I sure as heck can't find it.

You can do this via coding. Find someone local that is able to help you out or look it up.

My car unlocks all of the doors when the car is in Park and you turn the engine off.

a good place to start looking around - http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=175

Thanks, Alan! I figured there had to be a way. Still can't believe this isn't do-able from the factory!

Are you certain there is no option for this in the car settings/idrive?

In my e89 there's an option to unlock just the drivers door, or all doors/boot etc. within the locks part under vehicle settings in the iDrive.

Thought it would be like this around the world. Yes we can just configure how we want the locking, in the settings menu.

An easy alternative is not locking the doors in the first place. That's a setting US owners can get to in iDrive.

Yeah, in the US, the option has to be coded to unlock when the car is turned off, it is a quick fix but it's crazy that it does not come that way from factory, but then again so are a lot of other things...

Yep. Other things such as:

* You have to set the driving mode every time you start the car. I drive mine in the "Sport" mode almost all of the time, but I have to switch into that mode from the default "Comfort" mode every time I start the car.

* You have to manually turn off the Auto Start/Stop feature every time you start the car. I leave mine off almost always, figuring the few gallons of gas it saves will not come close to the cost of replacing the starter once it's out of warranty. Why can't I simply turn it off and it stays off? All of that constant starting can't be good for the starter.

* You can't read the Heads-Up display wearing polarized sunglasses. VERY annoying.

Who else wants to chime in on what bugs them the most?

My doors unlock automatically on engine stop. And my auto start stop I had changed by the dealer to remember the last setting. Diving mode is less of an issue for me because of the M1 and M2 buttons on the M5.

This is one less issue to deal with when you have Comfort Access. Any door you grab will open.

UPDATE: I had my car in for a minor warranty issue this morning and spoke with the service manager about coding. He told me that BMW will (at no cost to me) code some of the things that are driving me crazy. Specifically, the auto start/stop feature can be left OFF without me having to manually turn it off every time I start the car. The door locks can be coded to unlock when the engine is turned off, and the driving mode can be set to default to "Sport". He told me that these changes must be made within the first 12,000 miles, and that the process will take about two hours. He is supposed to be getting me a list of other options available and I will post it when I receive it.

I rest my case. Most folks would find a work-around that is acceptable to them. But you choose to yell about it here. That's a PITA to me. To each his own! (But I'm happy for you that you've found a dealer who seems to be willing to work this out. It would be interesting for the rest of us to know just how much responsibility the dealer is willing to take for coding the car to a non-spec condition. I'm not talking about the Auto Start/Stop -- that's now official. But there is undoubtedly a reason (probably having to do with risk of legal liability) why the doors don't unlock automatically when you stop the car. The first time a toddler tumbles out into traffic, or a carjacker climbs aboard, there's likely to be a lawsuit over this. Will you sign a waiver and release?)

Are all people from Oregon such tools or are you the exception?

Have you received the list? I was at my dealer today and they had never hear of it. Would you mind sending/posting the list once you receive it.
