The second grill was even harder & I resorted to bending the bottom clips away from the grill so I could get access & undo them. The finished result is well worth the effort though
Congrats!!!
Please post a pic or two if you can.

+1 on the pull method. I put my hands in the fins and pushed the grill towards the ground and then pulled out with steady force. Came out no problem on top first and then unhinged the bottom. Took 5 minutes for both...

Simple job but my OE grills were a right B to remove and took me ages, the same job on the e90 took about 5 minutes. I have some foam strip on order with the intention of sticking it round the grills, as on the OE grills I took off, but I'm seriously rethinking my plan considering how much aggravation they were to remove.

Sorry for the really late post. Got mine installed with Lacster's guide (thank you OP), but it wasn't as easy as i expected it to be. The front bumper needs more tugging to a point where i'm afraid that it would break while trying to unsecure all of the clamps of the original grille. The new grille fits in perfectly and it was very easy to install. In the end it all works out pretty well and i'm very happy with the result

Additionally, i also followed OP's guide on removing the mesh part beside the fog lights, but i took another route of plasti-diping the silver trim instead of painting them. However if you look at the pic, the mesh part of the Indonesian 5 series version, half of the mesh is covered and there's only a single hole where you can slide a finger inside to pull the entire part out. It requires more effort than what the OP said, as the hole makes it alot more difficult to pull the mesh out and as i couldn't apply equal force on all 4 corners, there's a risk of breaking it. So be very careful for anyone who is going to try to take the mesh out but apparently have a similar type of situation. Cheers

Really helpful DIY, thanks!

Wondering if anyone has had any troubles with the 2016 model / any changes? While it may have been a bit cold yday and attempting again after a drive might help -- i had a ton of difficulty pressing the clips down to clear and remove the grille. The removing of the rubber strip to gain access was spot on so thank you for that

just wanted to post my results here as well as i referenced Lacster's DIY!

i used the left over shadowtrim kit for my windows to black these out so while i was removing the front bumper to add the carbon fiber lip i went ahead and did these at the same time! i am wondering if i should spray paint the grills gloss black so they don't look so dull looking?

I purchased a new set of Gloss black Grilles for my 2011 535i M-Sport last week off Ebay for $58 shipped!!. they finally came, they look amazing and were packaged awesome! they came with some instructions that had you remove part of the bumper. I did some research here first and found this thread.

I used the method described and they came right out!

1. Just stick your fingers of both hands in the middle of the grille
2. grab firmly (like you are grabbing jail bars)
3. push down towards the ground and yank/tug repeatedly (hard) towards you at the same time until it comes free. it took a couple of hard tugs but they popped right out with no damage at what so ever!! I didn't have to put my knees on the bumper.

The pictures suck but i'll try and take some better ones tomorrow.
