yes, the transmission disengages from the drive train and that is why you see the rpm drop. I think it is only for LCI

It'll coast if:

a) You are in Eco Pro Mode
b) You are not using cruise control
c) You lift off the throttle
d) You are going at a speed in between a certain range (40-160kmh?)

And lastly, I think it's only April 14 cars onwards. My June 15 does it, my fathers September 13 LCI does not.

I believe there is also a setting in the eco pro menu that enables/disables this...

There's nothing about it in my Eco Pro menu, I spent ages searching for coasting when I first bought the car but eventually concluded I don't have it, which does seem very strange

Just select eco-pro, once the car is up to temp, it should drop down (engine) when you lift off.

I'm afraid it doesn't, I've driven hundreds of miles trying to get this working but nothing - I believe there should be a tick box in the Eco Pro iDrive menu which I simply do not have!

Not available to older cars, LCI only.
Go to: settins<driving mode<configure Eco-pro, and iif there is a box to tick, tick it.
But at 2011 I doubt it.

Does the 520d have the ZF gearbox? May be related to that.

EDIT: It has a ZF gearbox, but not the same variant as the other models, so that may be the difference.

I know someone with slightly later (6 months) 520d that does have coasting, I doubt that has a different gearbox so it's a bit perplexing.

Maybe the initial run of 520d's didn't get it? Or maybe it was originally a sports auto thing? My 530d with SA was built in October 13, I think (I registered it 1st November I think), so it was one of the first LCI 530d's, and it definatley had the coasting feature.
