Jump on it or shy away...
Or do I risk losing it by asking here, one of you might beat me to it
After some research, I found this Salvaged 2011 F10 on dashub.com. As per the links below, seems to be some visible cosmetic damage. I also contacted the local BMW Service Dept, and received a list of the service history. Nothing too bad stands out. It is a gamble with the N63, they had their share of issues.... I say jump on it if the price is right...but that number is purely up to you. Car looks good and if it has the CCP done, even better.

Call me skeptical, but, do insurance companies salvage cars for "light vandalism" ? I might be wrong, but damage would have to be pretty severe for insurance company to just write someone full check and take ownership of the vehicle.
I would personally pass on this one. |

Consider contacting your insurance company before you jump on it. Most insurance company will not completely cover it bec they just don't carry the same value as a clean tittle.
My brother in-law use to handle insurance claims for a auto body and he said the two most common reason for salvaging a vehicles is the structural body has been compromised and/or flooding. Resale value on salvage title vehicles will always suck! |

Tempting... be sure to bank some of your up front savings in case you need it for repairs. If you do, you'll come out even. If you don't, you'll be ahead. Just don't buy this car for a discount price and think it will never request more $$$ from you!

As someone with ~10 years of automotive salvage experience and having been on the receiving end of thousands of vehicles purchased from Copart & IAA I can tell you generally what you see is what you get. It is rare a vehicle is categorically misrepresented, and in the few odd cases where I received a vehicle that was a clear fraud the auction took it back and gave a refund. As is where is how is only applies if its represented fairly and honestly. Put up enough of a stink and they will do what is right.
My F10 is salvage title. I have full coverage insurance on it and no insurance company cares otherwise. If and when it gets wrote off in an accident it will be valued just the same as one without a story. I've bought, built and daily driven a dozen different salvage vehicles over the years with absolutely no issues getting regular insurance or nightmares related to the title. Resale value tanks while you own the car anyway, why not buy as low as possible to undercut your losses down the road? The only one that knows about the tiny brand on the title in the meanwhile is you... It's also been my experience, again with THOUSANDS of salvage vehicles worth of first hand experience, that salvage criteria varies so greatly it simply isn't definable. Much of it is up to the opinion of the individual insurance adjuster, if the owner actually wants the car fixed, if the owner makes any attempt to bump the initial appraisal because they actually want it fixed, etc. Flooded status MUST be disclosed, selling the car without doing so would be fraud. One time we'd bought a really clean Lexus RX that was salvage branded because the owner had shot himself in the head in the back seat. Literally all the car needed to be perfectly nice was a new rear seat cushion as it was blood stained with dried maggots stuck to it. The smell probably would have been another issues but it just goes to my point... that vehicle needed a $200 used seat and it would have been tip top. Its my opinion that the decision to salvage isn't solely based on physical damage to the vehicle, but the knowledge of the independent adjuster, whom as I've also seen in my experience... are just doing a job, are not car guys, and don't know their elbow from their asshole. That said I can't say I would buy a pre-TU N63 car. Far too many drivetrain issues in the earlier cars. I'd look for a 535i instead if you're shopping for a pre-LCI F10. |

Gentleman, ladies, thanks so much for the helpful information.
After sleeping on it and coming to my senses I'm going to let this one go. It's too big of a risk to take, who knows what is wrong with it. If I drive off the lot and the engine drops out, I'm screwed... (or i can drop an LS in it...) Thanks again!

"as it was blood stained with dried maggots stuck to it."
I've picked up a few vehicles with this issue over the years and am always pleased at the discount I can achieve.

Insurance companies do not salvage cars for that kind of damage. I' be very wary of any pre 2012 car that lived anywhere even close to the Jersey shore. There have been literally thousands of flooded "salvage" cars sold in NJ since the storm.
