10 Year Warranty on fuel pump
So I just got a letter from BMWNA stating that they are extending the warranty on the in-tank fuel pump, for 10 years unlimited mileage. Or get reimbursed if paid had it repaired out of pocket.
Anyone else got the letter? Rhetorical question, would you go to the dealer now and asked for it to be replaced, when nothing is wrong, or wait 'til the car dies unexpectedly and get stuck on the side of the road? The joy of driving the Ultimate Driving Machine (when its running). |

Just had both high pressure fuel pumps replaced on my 550 while it was in for its 50k maintenance. They didn't say anything about the in tank fuel pump though.

I didn't receive a letter but X5 5.0 just had fuel pump replaced due to melting of the connector at pump and my CEL was on . Not the HPFp's which is weird as my 550 had those replaced .

This great news because mines staring to act up on cold starts. I remember I got my fuel pump replaced on my 08 e90 no questions asked from the dealer just 2 years ago with 78k miles on it.

Bmw doubles, what are you experiencing on cold starts? My car shakes after every cold start after idle settles below 1k. You can feel it in the seat as if someone is pushing slightly sideways on the car. Worse with a/c or defrost on. Goes away almost entirely after complete warm up. Already had hpfp replaced and low pressure sensor replaced. no missfires or any codes.

If you cannot find or did not get a letter, just send BMW NA an email. I did as my wife's X5 is experiencing some of the same startup problems. When I asked about what extended warranties applied to her car, they replied with the following...
BMW NA has extended the limited warranty for the front propeller (drive) shaft on this vehicle to 10 years/120,000 miles as determined from the original in-service date, subject to the applicable vehicle and coverage eligibility requirements, exclusions and limitations that apply to the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty for Passenger Cars and Light Trucks. BMW NA has extended the limited warranty for the in-tank fuel delivery module (pump) on this vehicle to 10 years without mileage limitation as determined from the original in-service date, subject to the applicable vehicle and coverage eligibility requirements, exclusions and limitations that apply to the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty for Passenger Cars and Light Trucks.

Similar F10 low pressure fuel pump issue - reimbursed by BMW
I recently had the fuel pump connector melt on my 2011 F10. My independent shop serviced it, and I found the web sight at BMW that allows reimbursement even if serviced by independent repair shop. Just have work order (with all the info requested) and proof of payment. They came through and paid me a check within a few weeks.
What actually happened to me is quite hair raising. After parking the car in our attached garage with a near-full tank of gas, and not having any issues in the evening, we wake up the next morning with the house filled with gasoline fumes. I get to the garage and it smells like the inside of a gasoline container. I discover a stain below the passenger rear area with a gasoline smell and the stain all around the passenger rear fuel tank and wheel/brake systems. I started the car up and pulled out of the garage and onto the road with a slight slant toward the passenger rear: fuel starts pouring out of the passenger wheel area onto the asphalt going into the road gutter like rain runoff. I decided to chance it and drive to my local independent BMW shop only a few miles away trying not to touch the brake and to get there before the exhaust piping heats up. I parked the car away from things and on a slopped parking area where the rear of the car was elevated. That seemed to stop the fuel from leaking. I told them no smoking around the car! The service guys got back to me; the plastic cover on the low pressure fuel pump had melted around a wire connector. It opened a hole up where fuel could leak out. Why it suddenly did this in the middle of the night in my home garage is mystery, but we guess the car powers up the fuel pump unattended and redistributes the fuel among the rear tanks periodically. We think that's when the fuel pump malfunctioned, drew too much current and overheated the connector cap around the power wire that goes into the fuel tank, then fuel poured out until it reached equilibrium with the fuel level on the non-inclined garage. Then, when i drove it out of my garage, the crown of the road made it so all the fuel would congregate near the hole in the top of that particular tank, thus pouring out. You'd think anything that could melt a hole in the plastic would ignite the gasoline! Well, no it didn't - apparently it's quite hard to ignite a fuel tank on the inside without the correct fuel and oxygen mix - it's usually too rich on fuel ratio I read. But all that gasoline pouring out into the garage, through the brakes/wheel and into the and street seems quite hazardous. Any open flame or spark touching the spilled fuel would have been a disaster. -Magic

Reviving this thread. I can confirm this warranty is still honored. Local BMW dealer just changed mine for free. No questions asked.
