F10/11 - The Auto Start Stop function
Does the new 5 Series with an 8 speed auto, have the Auto Start Stop function where the car automatically switches off the engine when the car is at a standstill, then restarts it as soon as the driver presses the gas pedal again?

As of right now, yes. After further searching it's being developed for ZF's new 8 speed.

start/stop for the auto will come late this year. Porsche already has a working system for the Panamera.
I read a test with a manual car with start/stop and the fuel savings in real traffic, even in the city during rush hour, is very minimal. But it impacts the driving cycle that produces the average figures for the car manufacturers. |

Just drive ...
There have been tests since the 70's on coasting down hills, leaving in neutral, shutting off at red lights all sorts of things and at the end of the day ... just drive.

I don't see a concern if you have an option to manually turn off that option. I personally will use it. Maybe not all of the time but for example on my way to work I have three traffic lights withing 150 feet distance. Sometimes I have to wait up to 6 minutes without any traffic, just waiting on red. Don't understand why the engine need to be running for that particular case.

Meh, not even on my radar to be honest. I do believe in the end its a wash if it shuts off. I have heard / read results of engines starting and stopping over the last 2 decades and although technology marches on I think (gut feeling only) that it is at best a feel good option.

I have start/stop on my manual 120dM and it works just fine. When I put the stick in neutral and let go of the clutch the engine is turned off. When I press down the clutch the engine is started before the clutch reaches the floor.
I mainly drive on the highway so the start stop isn't used much though. |
