Check out my threads on X3 28i with my buddy mge92

Only upgrade to JB4 if you're getting downpipes otherwise not really worth it.

Thanks, but what about the ability to map on the fly with JB4?

Thanks again man. JB4 is too advanced for my needs. Looks like it'll be either the racechip or bms stage 1. My main objectives are no wiretaps/splicing/dealer giveaways and I'm willing to give up some gains for stealth drop in/take out.

There's also ActiveAutowerke8 that is solid.
If you see my threads with Dyno (RaceChip) vs Dinan.

If you're near Central NJ or North NJ, you can drive my car and see how it feels.

In your case, here are the list: (from the cheapest to the most expensive)

- BMS Stage 1 - Cheap, rough power delivery, not weatherproof enclosures
- RaceChip Ultimate - Smooth power delivery, weatherproof enclosures, good customer support
- Dinantronics - Expensive, good quality and customer support, offers warranty

Let me know if you have question. I have access to all of the 3 brands.

Bms stage 1 for stock cars not looking for more advanced features and maps
JB4 stage 2 for everyone else

Check the vendor section, some vendors like ourselves offer 14 days money back guarantee on the BMS tunes

Just installed my stage 1 tune, super easy. Where did everyone hide the box and wires? Think the instructions on the Berger website are for a 3series so it's not exactly the same setup under the hood.

Just installed mine two days ago on a 2016 528i (thanks, Mike at X-PH). For now, the box is sitting upfront between the air intake and the crossbar. But I'm definitely getting the weatherproof enclosure and some zip ties.

Performance-wise? Definitely a nice tune. Initially, I couldn't tell much of a difference in normal/comfort driving. Sport mode however put a smile on my face immediately. Very noticeable difference from stock. And all of a sudden, I'm not yearning for the 35i like I used to.

Now that I've put about 100 miles on it, Comfort mode has come a live. Certainly at the 3K RPM mark. Definitely more pull and easier acceleration even at high speeds. Easily breezed by 65-75mph traffic today. In fact, I need to be careful as I was pushing 95mph without even realizing it.

MPG economy looks good. About 28 combined at the moment. But I'm going to do manual calculations to confirm. If you're on the fence like I was....get this tune. Worth the $380.

That is the difference btwn BMS Stage1 and RaceChip/ActiveAutowerke8 ..

With RC/Active you feel it in all modes across wide band of rpms, the bms s1 is only felt in sport and higher rpms sure is not bad but after spending 2yrs with my racechip I needed something to get rid of the 28i Lag and that worked out perfectly.

Then I stepped into downpipes + ecu flash

Look at me now, with a X4 M40i (355hp/343tq stock at the crank) versus 287whp/329wtq before and I prefer everything in the 35i over the 28i.. the 5 series and X3 are heavy cars they need the 6 cylinder to move without hiccup and enjoyment, plus the value of the better engine.

Yeah, I was close to getting the RC. Probably read every single post you have on that chip, lol! But, I hesitated putting down the extra $200. Mostly because BMS S1 appeared to be the more popular one and I wanted something safe with a track record. Although it appears RC is quite popular as well now.

I suspect eventually I'll sell the BMS and try out the RC because you're not the first person to say the power is felt more evenly across the entire RPM range regardless of driving mode. That would be welcomed.

I hear you on the 6-engine. Personally, I LOVED the diesel I test drove in March. Talk about amazing torque. But wasn't ready to plunk down an extra $10k to get one with M package. Gotta have my nice rims :-)

For now, I'm just happy to enjoy a much "peppier" 28i that still gives me pretty great fuel economy at 28-29/MPG.

Yea I agree $380 vs $600 for RC is quite a difference but there's reasons for it..
- Weather proof casing
- Allows you to change settings
- Bluetooth option to change settings from your phone

On the other hand, Active8 is also a strong contender but installation is bit more complex than both. But its a strong tune with good quality case.

The RC can be had for around $400 too, at least thats when I sold mine here on the forums.

Other options to consider if BMS Stage1 is not enough are
- RaceChip (new module) (https://www.racechip.com/shop/bmw/5-...0kw-350nm.html)
- JB4 OBD2 w/ Flex Fuel wires for E85 use
- ECU Flash from a Good Tuner

I'm honestly slightly disappointed with the jb stage 1. I can feel a difference but I wouldn't call it night and day. Gives it a little more pep but doesn't transform the car by any stretch of the imagination.

Compared to the dinan tuner I had temporarily though it is def more peppy at a fraction of the cost.

Not sure what you were expecting but +4 psi is a big bump from stock ... Cant go any higher on a stock car no matter which tune you use

maybe you have gotten use to the power ?
maybe you need something thats felt across the whole rpm band ?
have you try adding some E85 ? or race gas?

My only prior experience with a tune goes back several years when I had a GTI. I remember the stage 1 tune completely transforming the car. The difference in power was immediately felt and quite significant. Guess that's what I was hoping for but still at its price point and ease of installation the jb stage 1 is worth the price of admission.

Stop it. I already caught myself back on the RC website. I'm really curious about the power delivery across the RPM range.

Pro-BMS folks tell me these Stage 1 tunes are all the same. And that you won't/can't really see an MPG improvement as RC claims. But I do hear/read different folks give a nod to the RC in both regards.

How long did you have you RC? Any issues? And was installation as simple as the BMS?

Reviving an old thread here but wanted to see where are you guys putting the box at. I've also read that people are saying to waterproof it. Could someone fill me in a little. I'm new to this whole mod arena. Also any feedback for performance after such a long time.

I know this is old, but I have 2013 528i and I cannot get MHD to work for the n20 engine. I struggle with finding anything that works for this engine. any suggestions? Trying to stock tune to 93 octane until I get downpipe and intercooler. But which one did you install? Thanks!
