2012 528xi - Last min decision
Ordered a 2012 528xi Imperial Blue with Tech, comfort, cold wether, BMW apps, nav, conv.
Car will ship out tomorrow, so I still have a day to cancel. I've been reading and everyone seems to hate the N20. I originally drove the 535 and it was decent. I don't need a race car or plan on racing it. I had a E60 M5, m3 etc.. The question is: is it that much slower to the point where I'll hate it or should I go with the 535xi and just deduct a few options. It ends up being $100 a month more for the 535xi.....$684 to $780 a month with $0 down 36 month 12k. Pay $100 more and go with the 535xi and only have nav and wanted seats? Or stick with the 528xi with the options since I already own a 2008 Audi A8 and a E500 if I want more speed with V8???? I've been reading last 2 days no one stop and it seems like the only people that bash the N20 are people that don't own one or expect it to be a M5....it's not a M5....however for $50+k I don't want to drive a go cart engine on a 4000 lbs car. Any input would be appreciated, I would go test drive the 528 but BMW is closed on Sunday and tomorrow the 528 ships out....ughhhhhh |

Anyone own a 528xi that can shime in? Everyone is saying the same thing, must be for a common sense reason as I would think the same. Then again the couple people that own one love their 528xi.
Option is always to do software whenever that is available and get it close to that 300hp range so I can feel some what normal...lol Thanks for the reply guys. |

i own a a 2012 528xi....my only complaints is how it sounds at idle. but to me its fast enough for me especially in sport mode. also gas mileage is pretty decent. just my 2 cents goodluck whichever route you choose .

I would just cancel the order until you can test drive the 528. The 528 in sport mode has a pretty jerky ride, in normal mode, there is not enough power for some unexpected events. Overall, one must ask themself, do I want just enough power or more than enough power, then again, even the 550 dont have enough power for some people.

Always try to test drive the car with the engine/suspension you want. If you want M-Sport, drive an M-Sport (or at least a Sport model) If you want the 528, Drive the 528.
If I were in your position, I would cancel the 528 until you can drive one. If you like it, you can try and find it again. The engines are different and will drive different. What you liked about the 535 might not be present in the 528, or you may find that the 528 is perfectly fine for what you want out of the vehicle. What matters is that you like it, so don't be put off people here. That said, you should test it so that you will KNOW that you like it, instead of finding out later that you hate it and regret not getting the 535. Golden rule - don't make such a big purchase without a test drive. Especially since a lot of people don't like the 528xi. It s a less refined power train not just a less powerful one.

FWIW, I too at the near last minute ended up going with a 535 instead. I test drove both, twice, and the the 528 was ok...you had to use most of the rpm band. The 535 was noticeably more adequate for the size of the car. Coming for an M3, I knew both options were me the "same fun", but at the same time I didnt want to be yearning for a bit more power while being stuck with the 528 for the next 3 years.

So drove a 528xi this morning and it's perfect for ME. I did not see that much difference between the two in terms of ride quality, idle, "4 banger feel", however it is a little faster (535) on the low to mid rpms.
I'm sure there will be mods soon: software, exhaust, intake and I'm sure I'll be around the same power if not more. I rather spend the extra money and replace those hideous wheels and maybe a lip, diffuser, spoiler and room spoiler. I too had fun driving this car, again im not buying for speed otherwise id buy another E60 M5 so going to call the dealer to ship it. I'm getting an amazing deal and makes no sense for ME to drop this deal and go with a 535 just for a little more power and pay regular price for the 535. Let's hope I don't regret it Thanks for the help in making my decision! |

The N20 is a great motor. It does have more power and torque compared to the Audi 2.0T. Paired with an 8spd transmission, it should be able to pull the F10 around nicely for daily commutes. Congrats!
