New (used) 550i
Just dropping a quick hello. Picked up a used 13 550i M Sport a few weeks ago. Love the torque of this beast. I'm coming over from an e92 M3. So I'm having to get used to the "softness" of the suspension though I'm still impressed with how this big heavy car gets around. I threw on some Pole Position S-04s yesterday and I can't wait to excercise those this weekend.

It has the passive suspension. So the only thing it changes are the steering and tranny modes. Which is fine by me, I traded the M3 for a more compliant suspension and a bit more room. Though I do miss the sound of that motor, even just cruising around town. That thing sounded awesome, even with the stock exhaust.

Thanks. I will try to post some when I get it cleaned after the rain from the upcoming hurricane blows through.
Been a blast to drive so far. Had the vibration issue, did the 60mph to 10mph thing that was suggested by some on this site on a deserted road the other night to clean the pads and rotors and its been as smooth as silk since. That right up on here saved me a bunch of time at the dealer. It has brand new brakes from the dealer so I wonder if they just never bedded them in properly. |

Run the last 7 digits of the VIN through bmwvin dot com. BMW played games with packages every year. My '12 550i has electronic dampers but not the active suspension. If you run your VIN you'll see exactly what you have. It sounds to me like you know what you're talking about, so I'll bet you already know, but it can't hurt.
Swaybars might be a consideration... it's popular and on my to-do list. |

So to the owners of the Active Suspension... which one is preferable?
I just looked up mine and realized I had the 704 Sport Suspension (passive). |

Zero, I had a vibration at around 55mph, then again at 65 and 70 on up to about 80. It was worse getting off the throttle at 70 and coasting. I know it's not the tires because I had new tires put on and it the vibration stayed.
Basically after a search I found a remedy from a forum member on here. So, find a nice stretch of deserted road that is straight. I found one in a commercial area where all the businesses were closed late at night. Get the car up to 60mph, brake hard to 10mph, accelerate back up to 60mph and repeat this 4 to 6 times. Then just drive around like normal. Keep I'm mind the brakes are hot after this, so they will stink and don't sit in one spot at a stop light for too long so the rotors won't warp. I only did it 4 times. I suppose it heats the brakes up enough to clean any desposits off the rotors left on them from the pads. I did it 4 or 5 days ago and the vibration hasn't returned yet. I can't remember the forum members name but it was explained it a lot better by them. |

I just took an easy 10 min. drive back to the house. I just made sure that the first few stop lights I came to, that I left enough distance to "creep" slowly so that I never left the pads on one spot on the rotor for too long. If the rotors are fairly new and thick, its not as much a big deal as worn or thinner ones are. Thicker rotors dissipate the heat better.
