Sport vs Sport+ vs Sport mode????
I tried reading the manual on this and could not find the difference. I have a 2013 550xi M sport package. What exactly is the difference between sport, sport+ as opposed to just tipping the gear lever to sport mode but still being in comfort mode? Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

I was playing around a bit with these settings this weekend. From what I've found sliding the shifter into Sport takes away 8th gear and holds the gears a little longer than flipping the toggle to Sport mode. Sport and Sport + toggles are the same except sport + deactivates traction control.

I thought so too, just wanted to confirm. Thanks for your feedback guys!!! So if you leave the gear in D but you are in sport mode, shifts are quicker, suspension firmer but you still have 8 gears? Is that correct?

Nope, at least not in my 2011 535xi. Shifter in D, toggle to sport, 8th is locked out. I think moving the shifter to the left or toggling to sport is the same thing, as far as the transmission and throttle control are concerned.

Thats what I was trying to prove. I found that If I toggle to sport while cruising at highway speeds, and then manually upshift, the revs do not drop and the gear indicates I am in 8th. Since there is no change in RPM I assume that Sport mode retains 8th gear if the shifter is left in D.

Set the car to Chassis only and toggle to sport mode, obviously no gear change, but flick the stick to DS and it drops two gears. So there is a difference in the configuration of sport with DDC settings vs. using the stick. Quote:

You will probably notice the engine revs higher and gear lower immediately. If you put gear back to D, engine upshift back 1 gear..... So there is definitely something going on between S/D....

On 2013 M Sport cars with the mechanical suspension:
Sport + is Sport with "Dynamic Traction Control" which = The ability for our awesome silky smooth high efficiency I6's (and 8's obviously) allowed to spin the wheels lose and get the back out like an Old School Muscle Car (can't get enough of how "I'm perfect at everything" the N55 is). Sport/Sport + Cannot be "configured" on 2013's for some stupid reason. Therefore we get aggressive throttle response, aggressive shifting, higher RPM holding and heavier steering. "DS" (shifter to the left) ONLY affects shift points and shifting, not even throttle response as far as I'm concerned. Putting it in S AND DS *DOES* make a difference. In "S" itself, the RPM's will hold high but shift well before redline. In S *AND* DS, you will pretty much see the car wanting to redline every gear, and it'll drop down an extra gear when you even put it in DS after S. What I'm not sure of is whether DS holds gears higher than S when DS is selecting alone (without DS). I'm assuming they're the same in that regard.

With the latest software there is also one positive difference between Sport and Sport+ that has not been mentioned yet.
Sport+, and shifter in M, disables the "kick down" function and holds the selected gear. Say you are driving in 3rd and presses the throttle all the way down, it won't downshift unless you use the paddle and manually downshift. Same with upshifts, it won't shift up even though you hit the limiter. It just keeps on going at the redline until YOU select to shift up. This gives the driver more control over the gearbox and let's you decide if it's best to shift or stay in gear. That way you avoid having a upshift on redline just a few metres before braking for a corner etc. |
