Cool Ashtray replaced with single cupholder?

I am wondering if anyone has yet replaced the stock ashtray in the centre comsole with the single cup holder? In my 535iX M-Sport automatic the ashtray is a useless piece. I wish we had the option to factory delete. Who smokes in a car these days? I will be no doubt replacing this piece to grant me easier access to my ongoing caffeine addiction or to simply hold my Blackberry between looks.

I don't think cupholder will fit in there, the hole is too small. I just put my gas station receipt in there. I do agree it's almost useless. anyone found a good use for it?

The only options you have are to pull out the ashtray insert completely, or replace with a non-ashtray model that allows for a little more space for coins or whatever. The insert part number can be found at RealOEM. I put one in my car. Although you don't have too, I also drilled a small hole in the side of the new tray to allow the ashtry light to iluminate the tray at night. (Similar to what we have with the ashtray insert.) This insert is no where near a proper size to handle a drink.

I took the ashtray out and I use it to store the garage door opener for my office parkade.

So I am confused on the size of the non-ashtray insert. Online pics looks like a proper cup holder. Are you saying its not a real cup holder size ghueser????

The difference in pictures is between the Manual and Automatic equipped models. Manuals have one cup holder located at the "ashtray" location, then another fold out cup holder mechanism in the console. Automatics get two cupholders up front, and have the ashtray. (Which is not sized to hold a drink)

The storage insert Part Number is 51169213657, and if I recall, was around $10. Once again, this can replace the ashtray insert in Automatic equiped cars. Also, BMW did not put a light window in the unit so if you want this to be illuminated at night, you have to drill a small hole in the side to allow for that. When you take out your ashtray model, you will see what I mean. the ahtray model has a clear plastic window diffuser, this is not neccesary for the insert model, a simple hole at the right location does the trick well.

How difficult was it to pull the centre console cover? Any tricks? My dealer is trying to find the part to check on OEM stock for me. So far not in Canadian inventory controls with BMW.

In Canada Homelink is part of the executive package which requires navigation so I am guessing 'Goodchip' like myself saved the $$$.

Forget replacing the ashtray with the single cupholder as the size is off slightly and it won't work despite BMWs and anothers posting here.

Just cut the hole out bigger with a Dremel. Just kidding.

At least get the insert I talked about earlier. At the very least it removes the "Ashtray" element out.

You will still need to drill a hole in the side of the insert to allow for the light to come in at night. Just compare to the ashtray insert you now have and you will know what I mean.

I will be following your suggestion the day I get my week 14 delivery. Thanks for the heads up, I may not have realized there was a light in there. my 1st F10 I had for 6 months I dont think I ever opened the ashtray, this time around with the storage insert I hope to use it for something!

Two pictures attached show the regular Ashtray (on the right) that came with my car, and the "Insert" (on the left) that replaced it. On the second picture of the two parts on their side, you will see the hole I drilled in the Insert to allow for the light to shine into the tray at night. The Ashtray had more of an elaborate setup with a seperate clear diffuser. The hole seems to work fine though, and allows for plenty of light to illuminate the inside. The plastics are different between the two, the Ashtray reminds me of the old style bakelite. Most likely needed to handle the high temp of a cigarette. Once again, I can only assume that your Manual transmission car has the same size ashtray, but can only speak to the Automatic. Call your dealer to look it up to make sure.

Sorry for the HUGE Pics!

Thats really good to see. Bigger is better. Hopefully this will give others who have complained of losing items down the side in the struggle to remove them from the ashtray a simple alternative. I know I will drop the few $ to try it out.

Thanks to ghueser for this info!
As a non-smoker, I found it really annoying that the ashtray comes standard, but it's great to know that there is an alternative
