180001: Catalytic Converter: Efficiency Below Limit Value Error

Hello,

I have a 2012 528i (not X-Drive) 110K miles. I am getting the above mentioned error. I had a HPFP go out on me and upgraded to the new design. I am not sure if this is what is causing the error or just a coincidence.

I have replaced both Oxygen Sensors and always using 93 gas. The check engine light comes on and off. I am using Ista for scanning, no other codes comes up. I don't want to spend 1K+ only to find that I replaced the wrong part.

Please help!

Thanking you all in advance.

What's the time between HPFP change and first error?

Hate to suggest this but, bad catalytic converter? I know that's a long shot as converters rarely go bad, unless you're running rich and burn out the element.

Thanks for your reply. I would say about a month after.

Thank you for your reply.

How will I know if my car is running rich if I don't have any other codes?

Hello,

I replaced the catalytic converter with used one. The light went off. Scanned with Ista D, no error code.

I would like to thank you all.

BMW recommend cleaning the catalytic converter first if the monolith is not damaged. I performed this recently and error went away. To avoid risk of damage, I only use a garden hose and it went well. Attached is a file form TIS

I agree with you. Even though I don't post much here, but I have learned a lot from this community. People in this community are always willing to help.

Thank you.

Thank you for sharing the PDF file.

I used Cataclean and it did turn the CEL off for sometime (a month maybe) then the light came back on. I did soak it in dishwasher soap for 2-3 days and rinsed it with a water hose, this didn't help.

I wish I saw this cleaning procedure before getting one. I surely would've tried. Maybe I will one day as I still have the bad catalytic converter and a pressure washer.

Thanks again.
