Need to change out my front brakes and was wondering if anyone had any tips or links they could share. I found this which seems like the answer. http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=845808
My question about that tutorial is he mentioned having the right c-clamp to make clearance for the brake pads to be removed from the rotor. On the caliper where his c-clamp is, there is a groove. Is that for a small c-clamp or tool to depress the pad against the piston?

I just use a flat-head screwdriver (in between the pad and the rotor) to press outward against the pad. Much easier.

The OEM brakes are my first choice. Trying to avoid squealing. My e90 was notorious for squeaking. If you want more bite I would guess a slotted rotor would be the answer, but I don't know which brand that would be. Someone would have to do a brake test stock vs slotted stopping distance. I believe our stock stopping distance is 60-0 109ft.
The next step up is retrofitting M5 brembo brakes calipers, pads and rotors.

I ended up installing the PowerStop Evolution Ceramic pads from Rock Auto onto my stock rotors. The pedal feel didn't chance but the wheels stay clean and the brakes no longer squeak. I would recommend this to anyone who is sick of dirty wheels or high pitched squeaking.
Also, if you don't have the right sized c-clamp, you can pull the caliper against the rotor to drive the piston in. It doesn't take too much force. |
