535d real world fuel economy?

Just wondering what 535d owners are seeing versus the numbers published by BMW. Seems to me that the EU fuel economy numbers are generally very optimistic:
Fuel consumption
Urban in l/100 km 7.9
Extra-urban in l/100 km 5.1
Combined in l/100 km 6.1

Thanks in advance for your info.

Well, a quick look at Spritmonitor.de gives you a total of 7 vehicles 7.2L/10km to 9.96L/10km

My 535d is consistently averaging 8,8 l/100 km (last 20.000 km's).

Some parameters:
  • about 60% sportmode, about 40% normal mode;
  • about 30% urban traffic, 30% heavily congested traffic, 40% free flow highway (including good old Autobahn ).

So it's pretty safe to say that no one drives per the Euro cycle in real life.

I still think it's an incredible feat to have a vehicle that has so much power yet can acheive great FE if driven in an economical manner.

Edwin- I saw your car in a different thread and gotta tell you it is gorgeous!

Thanks!

In recent times Diesel prices in Europe have seen a particularly steep price rise, and in many countries diesel is no longer significantly cheaper than petrol.
Besides, a typical 535d is several thousand euro's more expensive than a 535i.

That's why I'm seriously considering a petrol bimmer as my next ride. Sounds much better as well.

Sorry but that consumption numbers are really impossible to obtain in real life.

My 530d is about 9~10 liters for 100km urban cycle and 6,5~7,5 fo 100km distance highway.

I get;
- 8.7, 80% town : 20% motorway
- 7.7, 20% town : 80% motorway

But I like to belt it on Sport+ whenever I get the opportunity. Sin not to.

What transmission do you have?

Its interesting that the 535d and 530d are rated for nearly the same fuel consumption with the 8 spd. The sequential turbos in the 535d along with a higher fuel rail pressure result in maximizing the performance and increased efficiency.

I hope the 530D and 535D gets the modified engine the 530xD have with more power and better fuel consumption. Feels strange 2wd has worse fuel economy than 4wd.

aaaaaaaaaaaaa - kinda obvious: the 4wd has a start-stop automatic (engies goes off when you are not moving) whilst the 2wd engine keeps running whilst waiting at the traffic light...

there are many threads of 4wd owners asking how to disable this start-stop automatic for good...

I am pretty sure the 4x4 version of F10 is more gurmand than rwd version. Even with the start-stop function of xdrive version.

I have automatic transmition. ZF 8 speed.

according to BMW:
530d xdrive
city: 6,6l/100km
highway: 5,2l/100km
combined: 5,7l/100km

530d:
city: 7,7l/100km
highway: 5,2l/100km
combined: 6,1l/100km

535d:
city: 7,9l/100km
highway: 5,1l/100km
combined: 6,1l/100km

The only difference between xdrive and non-xdrive is the reduced fuel consumption in the city - and this is only thanks to the start stop automatic that turns off the engine when you are standing in the city. Otherwise, the old 530d und the 535d is just as economic...

The official BMW figures are a fantasy. Here in the UK under very mixed driving conditions (long drives, around the houses, flogging it (not too often) and taking it easy) I get around 35MPG and my car has done 8K miles. BMW's combined number is a completely unachievable 46MPG.

1. The xD engine has more power resulting in higher top speed an better acceleration, even though it is heavier and has a 4wd system.
2. I have never heard of a 4wd system that doesn't require more fuel than without, so in fact the xD engine has further improvements in addition to start stop. Combine this with even lower mpg than the regular 530D and you have something else than just start stop.
It is in fact lower in City, combined and outside the city.

The problem is with the EU test cycle being so un-representative of real world driving. You would need to drive very intentionally for fuel economy to acheive those numbers, and from what I can see this is difficult to do with a car made for enjoying while driving .
This applies to all automakers, not BMW in particular.

there is: teh xdrive has the new 3.0d engine with 258hp vs. the 2wd has the "old" 245hp engine that debuted in september 2008...

@kave:
of course the new 258hp engine is going to be more efficient than the old 245hp engine and as you correctly point out; the 4wd is just as economic as the 2wd when it comes to highway driving, which alone is impressive.

but the combined fuel consumption results from the lower city consumption which result from teh start-stop automatic. turn that stupid thing off and you will burn diesel just like any other 3.0 diesel..

I am quite sure that when the 525D, 530D and 535D gets the new same treatment it will use less fuel in all three areas wether or not start stop is active. I am guessing 1dl/10km which is a lot of savings and is down to 520D territory.
BMW sells enough cars already so no need for the modified engines but I am guessing MY2013.
