POI Search Question on iDrive

Are the POI's in the Nav part of the map data or does it actively search via cell every time you look for something? I was trying to program my nav with a POI the other night and it said something like "unable to reach service". What am I missing here? I was just trying to find a state park...

Ok, well i found this on the BMW website.
What is a POI?
POI stands for "Points of Interest." A Navigation feature, POIs include restaurants, gas stations, airports, hotels, shopping malls, tourist attractions and more. Thousands are pre-loaded into the BMW On-Board Navigation system, so that you not only get to your destination safely, but have a great time along the way.
Question is, why is the car trying to access the internet?

i dont think the car is accessing the internet, just gps, same as aftermarket GPS.

Whatever system BMW is using though is second rate. It cant find a lot of things, perhaps thats why BMW sells the premium nav update to find more POI.

Try finding another car dealership (non BMW)... you'll see what I mean.

Ahhhh, I got this figured out now. The BMW Assist was trying to initiate but I'm not paying for the service. But I did figure out that I can send locations to the car right from Google Maps.
