The first test drives of the all new BMW M550d xDrive model [official info/specs] are underway and here is the first video footage courtesy of Sport Auto. The M550d represents one of BMW's new lineup of M Performance Vehicles (together with the X5 and X6 M50d and upcoming M135i), which bridge the gap between standard series cars and M cars.

The M550d xDrive features an inline 6 cylinder diesel engine good for 381hp and 546lb-ft torque.

Its official factory quoted performance stats puts it at 4.7 sec 0-62mph and a top speed of 155mph, and fuel economy of 44.8mpg (imp) / 35.84 MPG (US gallon). Unfortunately, the M550d will not be making it stateside.

The car sounds surprisingly good cruising and accelerating, but there's no mistaking that it's a diesel while idling...

tremendously nice sound for a diesel! Wonder if the sound is done on the radio like in the M5?

Yes, the engine sound is electronically enhanced through the speakers to match the driving situation from what I have read...

Combine this engine with the Touring, the ultimate wagon...but for NA, you get no powerful diesels and the GT instead...too bad for you! :

BMW really ought to bring over a few key diesel "performance line" products (5er, Xer and maybe a 3er) to the US market. With gasoline set to top $5 a gallon this summer... a sporty diesel BMW would fit the bill for many Americans.

Sounds really smooth and buttery on the high end revs, is that a real sound or fake?
I prefer this soundtrack to the M5 one unfortunately .. that V8 sounds a bit irritating, although the exhaust note and farts are nice

Would be awesome as a Touring. Would go a little way to make up for the lack of an F11 M5.

It really pisses me off that we wont be getting this, I had a 5 as a loaner and loved it. I would replace my is for this especially since the is was an afterthought, I wanted 335d. Well I do hope the next iteration of the d, if we even get one is enticing unless the new F30/F32 M pulls me away

Looks impressive! What is far from impressive is that we won't see it in North America
