Winter wheels for 520d LCI

Hi all,
New to both BMW and the forums having been a previous Volvo owner! But took delivery of a new 520d Lux LCI just before Christmas.

Totally loving the drive and the car but conscious that I should be thinking about putting some winter wheels and tyres on the car!

The original wheels are 18inch multi spoke 454's

I have been looking at a set of 17" 327 star spoke alloys fitted with Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D 225/55R M+S run flat tyres.

So my biggest question is will these fit straight on the car if I take the old ones off?

Might sound a stupid question but I genuinely have no idea...

Thanks in advance.

Yes they will - exactly what I put on mine at the end of October, since when the temp hasn't fallen below 3....

They're fantastic in the snow but pretty shit in wet / greasy / leafy conditions.

What is the cost of that set Trebor?

Xenon, am surprised to hear that they aren't an improvement in the wet. Do you think this is peculiar to that brand? From my limited research I would expect a better stopping and cornering performance than all-year tyres.

Finally (and sorry to hijack the thread) but does anyone know if it's better to have completely different wheels or if you can just swap your current wheels to winter tyres and swap the summer ones back on later?

I went for complete wheels because it's so much easier to swap plus winter tyres are so much better in a thinner, higher profile on 17" wheels as opposed to horrendously expensive 19" fitment.

My wife's car seems better on Pirelli SottoZero 18" in the current conditions. The Dunlop tyres "squirm" too much and the traction control is having a field day.

I'm running the 327 wheel set with the Dunlop 3D on my 535i and find them to be a good winter tyre. I don't have any traction issues flooring the 535i, perhaps I control where I do it.

As to fitting tyres on and off to same rims, not such a good idea on RFTs, can cause damage both to rims (risk higher) and the tyres are more susceptible to damage. It is one of the reasons only one repair is recommended to a RFT, (where permitted).

Addition to the Winter wheels question!

Hi and thanks for your help and answers.

I do have another related question -
My dealer who I purchased the car from has said that I will need to take the car back to them to be re programmed due to the different wheel size and circumference? And also to tell the tyre pressure warning system of a different tyre. Is this factually true and does it need doing? Any further help or advice would be appreciated on this!

Shake and bake I'm looking around 750 for wheels and tyres with approx 6mm tread on them which I think is a responsible price. Condition of alloys is mint with a small scratch on one of the arms. Will be able to report more when I see them!

Your dealer is talking absolute bollocks.

The overall diameter is the same.

No different than resetting the TPWS when we adjust our tyre pressures. We do remember to do that don't we guys?

All there in iDrive for users to reset TPWS themselves.
