Engine light with no Idrive alert

So I was driving home and my check engine light popped up, but I had no errors in my Idrive, car ran fine only thing I noticed was the engine temp was a hair higher than normal, ima let me engine cool down and check the coolant level. Can I reset the light myself? 535d with a racechip.

You can with the right tools, CEL are normally emissions related.

Can I use a regular OBD scanner? I have a Bluetooth one I’ve used on other vehicles.

UPDATE, so I plugged in cheapo Amazon WiFi code reader, worked like a charm. P0401 code, EGR recirculation. I cleared it and we will see if it comes back.

WCR3D is correct...OBD II (check control light) is engine emissions related (and also a US DOT requirement since 1996). The iDrive's Check Control System alerts for other things that are not related to the CEL (OBD II) warning light.

And as you found out...when the CEL illuminates...you can (at the least) hook up any generic OBD II scanner/reader to pull the DTC (diagnostic trouble code) because it's mandated by the 1996 OBD II mandate to meet a standard interpretation for emissions across all car manufacturers. You can even google most of the many common "P codes" since they have been discussed now for two decades.

That’s what I did, I googled and cleared it, if it comes back I’ll clean the EGR lines.
