RFT Tire Cut

Hey Guys, hit a nasty pot hole last night and immediately the low tire pressure warning started coming up from the left driver side tire. Checked this morning and saw this cut in the tire (see pic below).

What do you recommend I should do ? Can this tire be repaired or do I need a new one ? Should I call Goodyear and complaint ? I would like to go to the dealership but would prefer going to a local tire shop and see if they can fix it first.

Any information you guys can provide would be helpful.

Don't think that has any repair. Are you running run flats?...I hope, if not I'm not sure how you made it home. Also, some local BMW dealers offer rim/tire insurance. If you did not purchase any such insurance, you will simply have to purchase a new tire and absorb the cost as I don't think it make sense (i.e., from a deductible perspective) to file an insurance claim with your auto insurance.

Thanks for the reply Leon. Yes I do have Run Flats, the only reason I made it back.

I don't have tire insurance. Last time I had a bubble, I call goodyear and got a claim # which gave me a discount on a new pair.

How much would a new tire cost approximately ?

Big mistake! Tire insurance is a MUST in my book if you live in the Northeast because of the pothole problem. BMW has replaced about 10 tires for me (no lie) with no questions asked. I have a 2011 535 xi, 19 in wheels. The Goodyears are terrible. I got a BIG bubble in my tire on the way to Charlotte NC. They did not have any LS 2 Goodyears available so I got a set of Bridgestone Potenza's. They are more durable than the Goodyears but they are a "summer tire". Only time will tell with that...You will NOT be able to purchase tire insurance from BMW after the sale is completed....New tire is about $400-$450...

You can get 245/40R19 GoodYear LS 2 RFT from TireRack for under $400. Currently $385 + shipping.

And, I wouldn't necessarily say "Big Mistake", I'd say more like "unfortunate, but completely understandable, missed opportunity".

Personally, I'm in the same boat, but insurance was quoted to me around $1800 I think, and I had no idea the level of problem that folks are facing on these F10's in regard to tires. I just came off a 2010 E60 535, and never once had to so much as think about my tires/wheels, for any reason whatsoever (beyond just topping off air pressure), so it didn't even occur to me to think about it on this F10. (Different story for my E90 335 before it, but I didn't realize BMW was extending its same mistakes to the 5 series in that regard... kind of sickening, actually, when I realized 2 days after I got the car home ). I imaging there are plenty in this boat.

And to the OP: I don't think a split on the outside of the sidewall would be considered a manufacturing defect. I think Goodyear issued the discounts for bubbles due to some notion that they had a manufacturing issue, didn't they? Or was it part of some inherent warranty? Even if it was in-built road hazard warranty, I heard they recently changed their policy in that regard, and that they weren't warranting such damage from the factory any more. But I don't know for certain... just saw it on a forum or 2.

Same here, I never had any tire problems before so I didn't think it was necessary to buy the tire warranty. Had I known about this issue, I would have bought it the first thing.

I try to drive carefully but it was just one of those things when it was dark at night and the city decided out of where to renovate one of the local roads, leaving a massive man hole hanging out. Anyways, I don't think Good Year will cover this damage, but I will give it a try nonetheless.

The dealership has already quoted me $421 for the tire and an extra $40 for Balancing.

I just hope anyone looking to buy this car reads this thread or one like it. The 19" low profile wheels are problematic but it is what it is at this point. I hope you enjoy your car, it is a thrill to drive... God speed!

Bmw does not even recommend patching nail holes tyres; So, forget about repairing Side wall cracks which is not recommended by any. The main disadvantage of Run flat tyre is Side wall crack which might happen even with Small Pot holes as the tyre is very rigid when compared to Normal Radial. Most of the people, prefers Normal Tyres; but BMW is not listening as they don't even keep space for keeping Space Saver Spare Tyre.

Sorry to barge in on the thread but i just joined the forum and I do not yet have the priviledge to create a new thread.
Does anyone know why BMW does not include the 245/50 R17 tyre size as an option for the F10?
I have a 528 with 18" rims and 245/45 tyres. I wish to change down to 17" due to suffering a lot of tyre damage caused by bad road conditions were i live.
The 17" rims would allow a higher profile tyre and hence better cushioning effect.
BMW lists the 225/55 R17 as the only option.
I do not want to loose the traction quality of the 245s but nobody at the local BMW dealership can inform me why the 245/50 R17 is not listed.

RFTs on new BMWs may be covered by the tire manufacturer's road hazard warranty - however, this coverage is "brief" and may have some limitations on mileage and circumstances.

Advice: Check your tire warranty documentation that may accompany your car's owner's manual.
