Got a 2015 X5 loaner, what a POS
So incredibly dissapointed with the ergonomics and interior materials, and fit/finish on this thing.
1. Multitier dash looks and feels awful. Not only are there visible seams in the veneer by the center armrest, but the gloss plastic under the wood across the dash looks like something out a hyundai. 2. Tons of missing touches found in the F10. Shift boot plastic instead of leather, armrest missing leather wrapping (instead, more plastic), door pockets not lined with felt, door sills look like something out of a pick up truck. Scratched my arm on jagged plastic taking my hand out of the glove box... WTF? 3. Ergonomics are awful. Instead of concaving toward the driver, the door panels curve away from the driver, creating huge gap between knee and dash. Again, contrast that the cockpit feel of the F10. 4. Initially the idea of multicolor light effects sounded good to me, but the execution is cheap and over the top; the light strip are just too visible and look like glow sticks. 5. The base seats are atrocious. I have the M package in my F10 and this no longer features sport/multicontour seats but the ones in the X5 are *significantly* worse. Side bolstering almost nonexistent or set too wide making the surface almost entirely flat. I'm not a small guy yet found myself sliding all over on routine turns. It drives fine, and the pickup is good but im so disgusted by the interior I cant wait to give it back. What a dissapointment... 65k+ car... looks and feels way worse than my wife's 2013 MDX 20k cheaper. The F10 is worlds apart, amazing that there is such a huge disparity in quality and luxury of interior. Last edited by wheresmy5; 09-10-2015 at 08:59 PM.. |

Agree with all of OPs comments. Also, I've had three X5s as loaners and on all three their AC sucked compared to our F10s. Even on Max AC it takes for ever to cool the car down, and the placement of the vents also sucks.

Had the same issue in X3 weeklong rental, took way too long to cool down.

I wouldnt go the extreme and say its aweful... I have both and dont find it to be bad for an SUV. If you are to compare it to an F10, sure its lacking but just think how much more expensive an F10 compare to an X5 is.

Just wanted to point out..the gear shift lever could be plastic or leather depending on the options. Even on the F10 it is plastic if you don't get the sport automatic transmission. So your X5 did not have the sport auto if it was plastic.

I dont think its a bad idea. Just understand the X5 is much heavier so you need to make sure you have the correct engine to accomdate your needs. You might want to go with the diesel or the 5.0. The standard seats are less to be desired compare to the comfort seats on the F10. If that is what you are used too, then get the sport package to get the sport seats or order one with comfort seats.

Wow, here is my input from owning a F15 X5 M Sport and used to own F10 528 base and F10 AH5 Luxury Line.
Believe it or not, my F15 X5 M Sport has better interior finish that my F10 528 base. But, the F10 AH5 Luxury Line came to par with my F15 X5 M Sport. Last week I just picked up a F06 650GC M Sport, I think with the base options 650GC has, you will need to get a loaded F15 X5 to match up the interior quality. I noticed that some dealership gave you a different quality of loaner car. I know for once when I got stranded out of town, the closest BMW dealership gave the very base car. While at my home BMW dealership, I always got a somewhat loaded BMW.

^^ Agreed. I coded a neighbors base 528i awhile back and was surprised how relatively cheap it felt when I took it for a quick drive.

No options will change the look, materials, and fit/finish of the dash/armrest area. With the F15 you still get the multi tier wood/gloss plastic with visible light sticks wrapped around the perimeter of the wood; with the F10 you get all wood in these areas and the light housing is completely concealed. With the F15, you get two pieces of wood running down the borders of the arm rest area; with the F10, you get wood and stitched leather in these areas. With the F15 you get a plastic sliding door for the cup holder area; with the F10, you get a pivoting wood-covered door. With the F15 you get extremely flat, wide seats. I'm 6' 215 and was sliding all over the place; with the F10 you get significantly better side bolsters even with the base seats (maybe the F10 LCI brought an improvement for base seats, not sure).
We are not comparing headliner or steering wheel, or quality of leather (dakota/napa) which obviously vary with M/non-M trim. Sorry guys, 5 minutes in these cars and I am not sure how you don't walk away feeling they are worlds apart in the interior aesthetic and quality. |

The base 5 series doesn't come with leather, it's Sensatec. I would argue that the steering wheel is your main interface with the car - cheap wheel, cheap feeling car. The base seats suck in the 5 series as well, but keep in mind that it's marketed as a sports sedan so the seats are going to be more snug than an SUV that's not designed to be driven aggressively. Also, keep in mind an SUV is designed to haul kids, and that high gloss wood scratches if you look at it the wrong way, so IMO it's a smart move to avoid it in areas little hands can get to.
Everyone has their own opinions but I sat in a nicely equipped 2015 X5 a couple of weeks ago while waiting for an oil change and considering the SUV factors I mentioned above found it to be on par with the F10. |

Just got an X4 loaner and while the interior is on par with the X5*, wow is this little thing fun to drive! Awesome handling, super fast (0-60 5.2) and awesome exhaust note.
*even in the X4 there is less plastic in the center/armrest area- this section is finished in whatever wood/aluminum you choose. |
