My thoughts:

MFID is multifunction instrument display. Looks great, but a complete waste of time really. It has very poor contrast at night (so the blacks are all illuminated grey) and you have to turn the brightness right down. It's dirt cheap when you order the HUD though (they share the same internals), so that's why I ordered it.

Ambient lights simply don't work at all on my car - they are so dim you can't see them. With the MFID turned down so you don't get blinded, the ambient lights are invisible (even with the setting turned to max in the idrive). I have fixed this by coding, but if you aren't going to code, then you won't see them.

The HUD is a great option - means you can keep your eyes on the road. Even when flicking through radio stations or getting nav directions etc.

SLI I find OK, at best. Most of the time it's right, but some of the time it's very wrong. Could easily live without it.

The door handle lights are part of the ambient lights:
Thanks for your reply.
So is MFID the same as the Full Black Panel Display on my 3 Series? If so then it works perfectly in my car...
I also find that my ambient lighting could do with being 50% brighter but I've not experienced any of your issues RE one area is too bright and the other too dim.

^ no - the 3 series just has the black panel display for Nav instructions and so on, as does the 5 series. However, if you opt for "full" black panel display on the 5 then even the gauge backgrounds are graphics.

Thank you. That looks quite cool actually! I think I've seen something similar on a 6 or 7 series and I really liked it on them.

Getting real close now to placing an order on a 520d for my father.
Does anyone know what kind of price or deals are around for winter wheels and tyres? My father will definitely want a set for his new car...
Any advice would be appreciated

Wheels are German (Borbet) and TUV approved, so won't break in two at the first pothole. I use 17" with Avons. They are non-RFT so you either have to pay for TPMS sensors or put up with a warning light. I paid - used proper OE sensors.

Ride and ability in the snow or cold/wet on the Avons is awesome!

July build on-wards so 13 plate . You can tell by the mirrors as Pre-LCI do not have indicator repeaters whereas the LCI does have indicator repeaters in the mirrors.

Random post, but I would add MFID all day long, it is brilliant.

I actually mentioned this to my father earlier today but he hasn't seen one in action yet. Therefore he's not sure if it's worth it? He's keeping his spec rather conservative compared to others on here.

A German version - but gives you the idea of media/dials/nav instructions all in one display for him to see
