Exclamation Advice needed - stolen key-fob

Hi guys,

A friend of mine had a bag stolen with his BMW key-fob in it.

BMW is quoting £1250 to change the locks and fit new control unit and reprogram it.

Their insurance (even though it's fully comp) says they're not paying for it. And they're also saying if they only get a new fob and reprogram the system, they will no longer cover them for theft.

There was no address info in the bag that was stolen, but insurance isn't interested.

Does anyone have any suggestions or advice, does he have any other option other than coughing up the outrageous sum BMW is quoting?

Many thanks,

Vlad.

is it worth trying a different dealer, that would at least establish if it is a standard price across the UK or not. If its different, then you might be able to shave a bit off hunting around.

It's quite a bit of money though but I think you have no choice for peace of mind.

Should insist with the insurance, and push for at least a contribution minimum!

+1

Somebody tried to steal E92 (belongs to my friend) by smashing window and clonning the key. But his neighbour went out and these guys ran away.
Insurance did not want to know about it. After putting compliant they agree to replace both keys but that was it but he had to pay access. We insisted that CAS should be changed as well. At the end owner paids for CAS and insurance paid for both keys.

And later we found out that new keys were exactly the same as previous ones and they could still take his car if they managed to clone his key on that day.

Check your car insurance policy if it includes 'Lost Key Replacement' or not.

If no, I doubt the insurance company is going to pay anything for lost keys. If the keys were stolen/ taken by force, you might have an argument, but for pure lost/ misplaced - very doubtful.

Some policies do cover Keys by default and for some you pay a premium - also read the fine print on the lost keys.

I have had an insurance company specify that they do cover Lost keys but only if lost within 3 miles of your home - how do you prove that? So, even if you think you are covered for Key Theft; best to read the fine details...

BM wanted £1000 to fit a new barrel to the drivers door of my E60 when some scrote used a slide hammer trying to steal it off my drive, so sadly £1250 doesnt sound too bad for a full warranted job.

So many tossers around trying to steal our cars

If it is any use my car only had 1 key when supplied by a main dealer, I had to pay an additional £190.09 for a new key. (I wasn't too bothered by this as I got a good price on the car).

They also confirmed (verbally) that the old key had been cancelled by BMW - maybe what they meant was decoded from the onboard computer. You should maybe investigate this option.

isn't it a legal requirement to receive two keys?

Maybe, I'm not sure.

It could even have been they needed the additional profit contribution on the car and sold me the second original key. The deal on the car was very good.

It may even be that BMW auc policy stipulates two keys must be supplied but hey this was back in sept 2014 and like I said earlier the deal was good and the car has been great. Much more relaxing that my e92 330d.
