Rusty Calipers

F11 Aug13 - so not yet 18 months old ... front caliper inspection plate went rusty quite quickly, but now the rears (a neater looking design anyway) are rusting ..

On the E91 (2011MY) it was the hubs that got unsightly, now on a £40K plus car with 19" wheels, one's gaze is dragged to rusty calipers !

Anyone anticipate the conversation when it goes in for its first service soon ?

I always get calipers and hubs painted as soon as I purchase a vehicle, hate it when they rust!

Funnily enough, I nearly did this time .... just didnt get round to it .... mistake - so they've now fixed the hubs rusting, but not the prominent calipers !

I can tell you exactly how it will go...

My service was due, so I spoke to them about the rusty calipers, the dealer asked me to come in so they could photograph them 30 days before and get approval. In it went for its service, I then get a call saying that BMW have declined to do the work.

Now, I am not a hot headed person, but I went a little mad, saying that was unacceptable on a £40k plus car which I had bought brand new, and did they want to reconsider? No apparently. So an ask to speak to the dealer principle resulted in the dealer paying to have it done, and trying to claim it back later.

A good result, but I was livid.

PS They are a full caliper off job, not just paint in situ.

After a recent 500ml round trip down south on the freshly gritted motorways I parked the car up and didn't drive it for a few days afterwards. When I came to wash the car I couldn't believe the state of my callipers, back plates and worse of all discs! They looked like the car had been layed up for 6 months! No amount of heavy braking has cleaned up the rear discs, rust has taken hold.
Any suggestions as to how I can fix this, the car has only done 6K miles from new.

The M Sport brakes are worth speccing just to avoid this!

Although personally i'd prefer silver calipers to estoril blue ones.

Unfortunately that isn't an option on the F10, as far as I know, it would have been top of my list. The M Sport + pack doesn't include brakes.

I didn't know that! I assumed with all the extra kit available on the 5 that they would be.

Yes, very disappointing. Perhaps they hold the view that 5 series owners are a bit older and less wanting of big brakes etc......but not moi!

I feel for you, rust soon gets a hold when there is damp around, or a few days without use. Imagine what it is like up here in the Highlands, with all the wet and salt on the roads. Was looking at mine just today, front discs are not in a very good state.

I give them a good clean up when changing to my summer wheels, hope they will do another season.

The plates the OP has rust on, I use a touch of waxoyl to keep them from rusting.

I had mine coated with Opti Coat (probably the most expensive coating ever used on lowly things like callipers!) when I got my new car detailed.

Full detailing link here.

Couple of pictures attached here.

Another one...

Very nice mate - but the point being made is that BMW should not let this happen to a Premium Product !

Mine were already rusted when I bouught the car, I had a friend who owns an alloy refurbishment company prepare them and apply a couple of coats of black caliper paint to the calipers and hubs. He didn't remove the calipers as far as I'm aware.

Been around a year since I had this done and they are fine, no rust creeping through.

I did mines too when I bought the car in 2012. They could do with a new coat now to be fair. Will do this when I swap back to summer tyres in a few months. (sorry for the low quality pics)

The blue looks great on your car. I did consider doing mine in blue but decided to stick with black as I have black wheels.

I used VHT Caliper paint. They say its good for up to 450 degrees C!

I did 2 coats of the blue and then one coat of clear lacquer. Used a portable site light as heat to cure each coat for around 30 mins.

I guess with using a brush you have more control of what your paining, so that's better in a way. It took me ages masking everything off as I was a little worried that the spray would go everywhere.

They do various other colours in the spray. have a look here....
