2012 f10 550i or 335is?

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
hey guys, looking for opinions! Im considering getting either an 2012 f10 550i m-sport or a e92 335is. 0-60 they are similar, although, other than that, they are completely different beasts. I haven't driven either since I'm coming from an 09 328i, but I'm mainly looking for something that will give me speed along with the ability to enjoy some spirited driving. All opinions appreciated! Purely looking to see what you guys would prefer to drive. Thanks!

Keep in mind you are in an F10 forum, lol.

There is no substitute for driving each of them yourself and deciding what driving characteristics are more important to you.

Luxury or nimble handling is the greatest difference. YMMV.

I see you drive a 550i xdrive, how is the power on it? I've driven a 535i and i felt that, although fast, it did have a bit of lag to it. Do you ever wish it had more power? i would assume not since it has 400hp and 450tq

E92 for what you're looking for. The F10 is a big heavy luxury cruiser that doesn't handle particularly well unless you mod the suspension, and even then it can't compete with the 3 series. The 550 is certainly fast in a straight line though, and of course the F10 is much quieter, more comfortable and more refined. Also, the V8 in the 550 has issues (look in the N63 sticky above),

I have driven the 535i without the M-sport (luxury line) and the handling was a bit soft which was a turn off for me. How much stiffer is the m-sport? How is the body roll with the m-sport? i am aware of the handling differences due to the overall size and weight of the f10 compared to the e92, so I'm not expecting it to be as nimble.

The MSport passive suspension was not available until 2013. Prior to that you had either the standard passive suspension or the sport suspension with dynamic dampers and optional active roll stabilization. I prefer passive suspensions and opted to go with KW V2's but guys who have ARS say the car stays pretty flat in the corners. Others have replaced the sway bars with the M5 sways in the front and 550d in the rear to help with cornering.
You'll of course what to replace the dreaded factory runflats if the previous owner hasn't already done so.

Stay away from anything the N63. I'd get the 335is that engine is amazing.

If you dont have kids or just need 4 doors then go with the 335is. Also, not sure if you mod your cars but the market is much larger for the 335is

335is, based on this. The F10 does a lot of things well and is still a fun drive if you want bigger and more luxurious. But if spirited is all you want and don't care about the space or luxury, 3 series all day.

However, always, you should drive them both.

Maybe the OP should add a bit more info other than wanting free spiriting driving? Performance, exterior upgrades, suspension, the list goes on...I could be free spirited driving my son's Corolla Lol!

if you're going to get a 335is, you might as well get an e92 M3.

The N63 with a Stage 2 kit in aggressive mode is pretty sick. Not even remotely in the same class as a stock 535i.

If you're over 30, get the F10. If under, get the e92. If you have kids, get the F10. If you are single get the e92. If you are single and looking for cougars or professionals, get the F10. If you are single looking for college kids, get the e92. Seriously, I'd go for an M3 if I could.

They both have their places but honestly there isn't much "legal" that the 550 isn't capable of and even into the other side of it. I drive a 2012 550 with a tune and honestly wouldn't even trade it for an m3. I drive my girlfriends 335 quite a bit and the 550 "with a tune" outperforms it in every way besides maybe true feel of the road. Now that said the aftermarket segment for the 3 series is no comparison better than that for the 5 but a good bit needs to be done to make a 335 compete with a 550 unless you are on just the windiest road possible and even then the 5 takes corners pretty respectably. In the end it's going to come down to what you want and what you can afford. Both are great cars so can't go wrong either way! Good luck and keep us updated with your decision!

I wanted an E92 until I drove the F10 550. I didn't know what the difference was vs the 528/35 models and when I first got in and mashed that throttle I was sold.
Plus the interiors on the 3s and 4s, for the $, is terrible for what you pay. I do kind of agree on the age thing too. I'm a professional with my own CPA firm so the F10 is a better look for me and if I have to take clients to lunch or whatever.
After my CCP I haven't had issues with my engine so YMMV on all that.

However, the 335is is a hard choice comparatively speaking. Those are just great and always stand out.

Completely different cars; the size alone should be a factor.

To make my 2012 550i M-sport acceptable to drive (coming from a 2009 550i M-Sport which was an awesome handling machine), I added: M-5 front Sway Bar; 550ix rear Sway Bar; 20" HRE P40 SC wheels with Mich PSS Tires; and Dinan State 2 Tune. Ahhh...much better. Of course, I also have a new Viper for even more "spirited" driving.
