iPhone 4s in-car charging

I've done a brief forum search but can't find a clear answer and it's probably a daft question, but...
I'm seriously considering the above phone and would like confirmation that it will charge when connected to the car's USB port?
I know you can get a dedicated snap-in adaptor, but it seems an unnecessary expense if the USB connect suffices.
Thanks,
Jon D.

Yes, it will charge. My wife used the USB to charge her iPhone (4S) yesterday in my 2013 F11 530d x-drive...

Armrest USB is fine; glovebox USB is not.

Oh, and get an iPhone 5 whilst you're at it.

Ha-ha - what's wrong with the 4s?
After playing around with my partner's iPhone 4 last night, I'm rethinking the whole thing - it's quite a chunk to carry around and texting is more cumbersome than on my existing bog-standard Nokia, which is substantially smaller and lighter.

Pretty good 4s deal currently on offer from Tesco and seeing as it includes the option to return within 14 days, I think I'll go for it and see if I can get used to the extra bulk and weight.
By 'basic adapter', which one do you mean? I'd appreciate a link if you have one - thanks.

OK the part number the iphone 4 basic snap in adapter is 84 21 2199 389
I bought from amazon as BMW sell direct from there.
The link to see the part can be found here
http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_...nap+in+adapter

The basic one just charges up the phone and connects to the outside aerial
The music one allows you play music from the device as well - as I use a USB stick for that, I saw that unnecessary and saved some money by not ordering that version.

hope that helps

Many thanks, but it does seem rather expensive if plugging it into the USB socket does the same job. My existing phone (Nokia) works fine via Bluetooth, so I'll see if the iPhone does likewise - that's if I decide to go for it.

Iphone 5

Hi folks

I have an iPhone 5 and do have a cradle facility in the armrest but only have the basic set up (i.e. just an aux 3.5mm socket - no usb) if and when they release the iPhone 5 snap in adaptor does anyone know if I would be able to play music from the phone using that adaptor ?? I am assuming I can only play music through the 3.5mm jack on phone to 3.5mm aux socket and use a usb 12v charger adaptor to charge the phone whilst listening to music.

Any help or advice would be appreciated - can find a usb socket in glove compartment either........ the car was a July 2010 build 520d SE.

thanks

Walter

I have an iPhone 4 and via the normal white USB to Apple connector in the armrest it charges and replays music perfectly fine (all cover art is displayed, I can search tracks, playlists, etc via the BMW iDrive controls). It simultaneously connects via Bluetooth and full phone functionality is present.

Apart from a 'neatness/clutter' point of view, have not found a reason to invest in a cradle (it's all out of sight in the glovebox anyway).

Got a 4S and I am waiting to take delivery of a 2013 model F11. I thought that the difference in price between the media and non-media snap-in adapters was due to the media one having a built in fan. If I access media on a 4S with the Apple cable, does the phone actually get hot sitting in the arm rest?

I think you will find that the more expensive cradle allows you to play videos (film, music etc) that are stored on your iPhone...whilst the car is stationary...useful if waiting to pick up the kids...
