PIC: iDrive/Nav Screen Too Easily Scratched.

I finally took a pic of the damage to my screen. I still have no idea how it happened. Once again, I feel the screen is STUPIDLY delicate and I know that many of you agree and have had similar issues. It is always somewhat visible and only looks THIS bad in bright sunlight:
PS- Please do not bother with replies like: "Never happened to me" or "Mine still looks like new" I am looking for constructive solutions here.

Thanks, Joseph

Have you talk to your dealer about this issue?

"We won't even TOUCH those iDrive screens" was the answer I got from the Hassel SA and Service Manager.

I looked for a way to remove scratches from my old iPad screen, and all the recommended methods seem to involve using a very, very fine abrasive cream of some sort. I guess the idea is that you buff out the visible scratches with something that makes even finer scratches that you can't see

I never used any of these ideas as they seemed likely to do more damage than they repaired, but you can find them by Googling something like "removing fine scratches from plastic screens".

It's not a scratch, the Anti-Glare coating RUBS OFF very easily leaving the highly reflective surface underneath exposed. I guess thats why my previous FOUR BMW's all had protective plastic in front of the NAV or iDrive screen.

Our 2011 X5 iDrive has a few scratches on it also. It came from our first few cleanings. Changed over to the soft, electronic screen cleaners like you'd use on laptop screens and it didn't degrade any further.

Agreed. BMW uses the term "saves added weight" as an analog to "cheap plastic, easily scratched."

Joseph, that sucks! I feel for you....

I thinking about only using compressed air "dusters" (often used to clean computer keyboards) to clean my screen. Has anyone had a problem using a compressed air can to blow the dust off the screen?

Yes. Never used those dusters unless they are made specifically for a camera lens. The non-camera lens dusters can contain contaminants that will sandblast the surface you are spraying.

The best method is to use 2 new MF towels. Wet one with filtered water. Then wipe wet one back and forth in side to side motion---no circular motions.

Then take dry towel and quickly wipe wet marks of with one stroke.

Wow now I understand what you mean. I don't know of any products that would replace the anti glare coating, but it might be worth looking online. Its that, or a new iDrive screen (eek)..

I had a quick look on realoem.com. They list 3 part numbers for this screen, with different dates, looks like they improved it over time?

http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?...10&hg=65&fg=45

01 Central information display 10" 1 03/2011 65509243897 ENDED
01 Central information display 10" 1 09/2011 65509241826 ENDED
01 Central information display 10" 1 07/2012 65509266385

But lets say its the latest screen (at least that's what you'd want to replace it with if its compatible)... a UK price for that component alone is £1,787.44 + vat = £2144.40 which a quick google to USD is $3271.07

JUST FOR THE SCREEN!!!

They are taking the right royal pi$$ with that.

In the past, there has been a discussion that somebody had purchased a screen protector and from memory this had solved a lot of the problems of light scratches, plus it also gave future protection...i think the screen protector was made by 3M (maybe via eBay..?), but i can't be 100% sure.

Hope this helps a little..?

Unhappy info screen idiosyncrasies??

Roughly 18 months ago, noticed ''darkening spots/smudges'' on screen. Service agent tried various methods to ''clean'' screen. NO success. Local BMW distributors - on my insistence !!! had car for a week to have technical division do intensive testing. RESULT:''user abuse/micro!!!!! scratches''
Obviously I was furious (i.e.: always cleaned dust etc from screen with micro-fibre cloth etc) At own cost requested internationally known expert- a Professor @ local U in ''photonics etc'' to do testing. He issued 3(three) reports debunking the above finding by tech division. NO JOY from agents , had to replace screen @ own cost (prof's final report stated that NO scratches but protective film separated, causing dark spot- he removed protective film with solvent AND PROBLEM SOLVED!! Of course -no protective film then and damage will occur)Therefore had to replace COMPLETE SCREEN -bl--dy expensive. He actually made a remark in final report that he questioned why BMW does not offer a more cost effective solution (i.e.: replacing film) I have now resorted to legal action to recover cost but BMW IS NEGATING ALL ENTREATIES, TREATING MYSELF AND EXPERT WITH DISDAIN AND INSULT. Having been a BMW owner for 30+years- from 3 series to lately all iterations of 5 series plus ALL M5 models - this is disgusting and pathetic. PROBABLY my 2012 F10 will be my last BMW ever.:si gh:

I'm also having issues with my iDrive, although I feel my issue is slightly worse than yours...

My iDrive has cracked from about a third of the way on the top to the right hand side!!

I really don't know what to do- 2011 MSport with the pro navigation, do you think this will be a dealer warranty item??

That would be my answer as well. These are not touchcreens.

And for dust I use a fine duster that does not scratch:

Scratch

Hi, i'm from the Netherlands.I had the same problem with my BMW f11....i went to the dealer, i got a new one( warranty ) they told me i was not the first one.... So good deal!
If you don't get a new one you can clean it with a glasscleaner... It looks ok, only when the sun is shining it is harder to read.
Hope your dealer will change it!
Good luck!

i tackled the problem today by simply taking it off and polishing it. The vent cover comes off and you disconnect the 3 plugs from it. after that the screen is held in by 2 torx screws at the bottom. once off pull the lower part forward and it will come out. disconnect the purple plug and take the screen inside inside. there are 3 small torx screws on the back that will allow you to take the plastic shrowd off. after that the thin metal cover on the sides comes off with a little finesse. at this point just dab a microfiber cloth in some very fine rubbing compound and gently start to polish the screen. I did it all by hand and then used a drill attachment for the final stage. in the end you should be able to remove that stupid anti glare coating and everything will look brand new. I will test drive it for a few days and see if it really is a must... i found an ebay seller that provides an antiglare film cut to the exact size of the NAV screen, but honestly i don't see the use at this point.
