BMW Factory Fit tracker

My car (F11 535d SE) has a BMW factory fit tracker but 2 1/2 months after delivery, my dealer has yet to provide details of the tracker, how to activate it, the subscription information etc. BMW Customer Services claim there is no factory fit option (Clearly wrong!) and my insurance company refuse to cover me for theft unit they see proof that a tracker is fitted.

Anybody have any information about this?

I think the tracker is a dealer fitted option, not factory. However, it is listed in the configurator - is it itemised in your car's option list?

BMW offer factory fitted option for the tracker in the September 2010 price list, its part of the BMW Connected Drive. As I understand it, you have to pay subscription after that to activate it.

(The Dealerships also offer Trackers but they are not part of BMW Connected Drive and are fitted at the dealerships).

You could always change your insurance company whilst you're rectifying the issue. I'm with Aviva, via Swinton, and they didn't stipulate a tracker.

Hi thanks for replying.

It is definitely a factory fit option - Code is "5GB". the dealer has confirmed it's fitted told me that they had to buy some equipment to register the tracker with BMW but still no certificate of fitting or instruction on how to activate. Very shoddy really - it's so new that nobody at BMW UK knows anything about it. Given that it cost £325 inc VAT I'm tempted to ask for my money back and go elsewhere...

Jon I'm surprised they Aviva didn't ask for a tracker. If I don't get this resolved in the next few days I may have to cancel my policy and change.

Sorry for my ignorance but why do you want the factory tracking your fits?

Try LV as well, they were very competitive and didn't stipulate a tracker.

If it is the BMW Trackstar, it is operated by TrafficMaster. You have to contact them to set up your direct debit and activate

You really would think the dealer should know that, especially as they were happy to take the OP's money. I sometimes truly despair at the guff they dish out.

Thanks citrilla/Jon

Unbelievably 1 week after my last (of many) calls to the dealer (Syntner of High Wycombe) who promised to get back to me that day, we are no further forward in resolving this issue.

I asked if they could guarantee that, if the car were stolen tomorrow and I called, that they would know what to do and that it was definitely capable of being tracked. The only reply I got was "it is definitely installed".

I mentioned setting up a subscription with TrafficMaster but the dealer claimed not to know anything about that.

Apparently they are still waiting for paper work to come through!! 2 months after delivery of the vehicle.

If I hear nothing by the end of the day I will be contacting BMW UK direct. This isn't a trivial issue but it appears that the dealership either have no interest in answering me (Now that they have my money) or they don't know because the option has been added prematurely and the infrastructure is not yet set up in the UK. Either way it is not acceptable.

Sorry rant over...

Update...finally managed to get to the bottom of this no thanks to the dealer. The Tracker is factory fit and is administered in the UK by Octo Telematics UK. They were astounded by the poor service provided by BMW. It appears my car was registered by the dealer on the 1st December - 6 weeks AFTER I took delivery of the car (During which time the car was not covered) The dealer has not yet paid the subscription so although it's registered it still isn't covered.
The dealers still has yet to tell me anything other than promising yet again to get back to me. Great service, Thanks Syntner High Wycombe and BMW UK...
Final rant over....?

Yep change insurance companies trackers are all but worthless to the experienced thief.
Most insurance companies will cover cars Without one. I have never ever had to fit one to any high end car I bought new.
