As a typical asian, I'd like to point out it's Frappuccino.

Yea if you have short pockets, it comes in handy. Otherwise, my key ends up between the seats

You do push the button in front of it to "open" it right? It's the only way it will hold anything. In the open position I don't have any problem it holding beverages pretty well. My only complaint is that we only get one cupholder (since I don't count the fake one on the console armrest).

Yes, I know. I rarely have anything in it other than my phone (iPhone 4 fit great, iPhone 6 not so much). When I do put a drink in it, nothing has ever fallen out, but it is not a confidence inspiring piece of engineering. It is just so flimsy looking and shallow.

I did have one instance where a passenger put their drink in it without opening it and it took a tumble on a turn. Luckily the lid on the cup held but I make sure to open it for anyone else that wants to use it. They usually give it a quizzical look before putting their drink in it.

honestly, I never really paid attention to it up until now but they are annoying.

I hate how you have to fiddle with that shit to get the drink in without the whole tray moving up/down and creaking like a piece of garbage.

otherwise, any size cup fits and they are held in place no matter what sort of driving you are doing... so I'll give them that.

Bummer. Dangit. What's the point of putting out a "retrofit" when it isn't really...

I may just purchase a replacement cupholder unit to get rid of the squeaks and rattles that my 55k mile part has.

i remember my son holding his drink in the back and all i heard was what sounded like a river flowing when he dropped it i almost told my wife we we're going home with one less kid

I took my center console trim off and disassembled the cup holders a while back (primarily to remove a rattling dime); cleaned everything and hit the spring with a quick shot of WD40 and it's been quiet ever since. Took me about an hour, but that was mostly me trying to re-fit the trim back onto the console for the first time and being overly careful not to scratch or break anything in the process. Nothing like fixing one thing only to break something else.

I would've listed the car for sale that evening.

Hahaha I love this thread. I'm assuming most of you never owned an E series bmw. Bmws have the worst cup holders period. I feel privilege to own a f10 with what I consider fully functional cup holders. I drove an e38 for 10 years it could barely hold a dixie cup.

Exactly! My E39 cupholder was less than useless. The F10 cupholder is much better. It's all relative. Also, the E39 cupholder was so fragile that I ended up replacing it twice, and I rarely ever used it.

I believe it. This is only my second car lol. My family used to own an E61 with the dashboard cupholders and I remember those being crap. We had an E46 wagon but I was a little kid back then so I don't remember that.

My buddy designed for BMW in Munich 10 years ago. He worked in the Mini and BMW studio and reported to Kareem (??) the guy who penned the E60 interior.

He used to always talk about cup holders and Europeans had a hard time accepting American habits... they understood that cup holders were wanted, but couldn't wrap their heads around how nice it is to drive through a Starbucks and sip on coffee as you commute.

I had some beers with the design team in Munich and they all poked fun at the fact that the only reason cup holders existed was because the US market demanded them so much.
