Pure is developing upgraded turbos for n63 and n63tu!

So.. they need a test car down there in So. California. who's going to donate their car?

http://www.n54tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33586

Looks like they have a Stage 1 already finished and looking for a test car. Judging by the thread the tuning will be a flash with a Stage 1 stacked on top. Looks promising!

the sad truth n63 has yet to be flashed by anyone... N63TU stock turbos have not been maxed out yet. And here in NJ we had n63tu 650xi full FBO and aggressive flash tune blow it's engine.

Our engines are at the limit already. Many companies here now stick with only tuning M cars.

The majority of the engine failures on ANY car are tune/equipment related, not a failure of say the Piston, rod or engine component etc (the component fails BECAUSE of an issue, not due to power). The big downside on boosted cars tends to be most not understanding you cant just infinitely increase boost for more power (I see it on here every day with "whos piggy back makes more power") and people just going for the one that wicks the boost the most not even considering things like fuel differences, climate etc. The failure to research how an engine works, why one makes more power than the other, and even the meaning of "Boost" (for those that dont know, boost is a restriction of airflow, not a measurement of power increase, and it is variable from car to car, mod to mod etc) is something that more should do before jumping into mods, especially on an expensive engine. Its one thing to drop your car off to a shop, let them work their magic on a custom tune (hopefully they know what they are doing instead of using your car to get a big dyno number and put themselves on the map with no interest in how long your car lasts) and not have anything adjustable, but its another to buy ANY device which increases boost (Burger, ESS, etc) and turn it up on your own without checking air fuel ratios, fuel quality, or running datalogs to see how your car is reacting to it. Ive fixed a LOT of vehicles people have blown up from either other shops, or they worked on it themselves, and the usual explination is "I saw car XYZ on the internet do it, so it should work fine for me", or "Shop ABC said they do this combo all the time and its awesome" and either there was an installation error or the shop hadnt tested it with 91 octane or in hotter climates.

In closing, I believe these vehicles have a LOT of potential to make a LOT of power with the surface barely being scratched at the 500 rear wheel horsepower level, but the term "gotta pay to play" comes into effect with requirements such as better octane, more efficient turbos, and a tuner that understands your driving habits with regards to not just setting your vehicle on Kill when you floor it at every stop light, hit the track every weekend, and constantly do 160 mph runs on the freeway. The big benefit to the S63 engine is the lower compression which makes it a lot more forgiving to these problems... it can still be done on the higher compression N63tu, but now detonation and knock are real issues, and things like higher octane (E85 or race fuel) and Methanol injection become necessary if you cant pull more timing.

you sure ? What about the Alpina, I dont know much about it, but I thought it was the same with just a tune and bigger turbos ? or does it have lower compression internals ?

Per Alpina
Quote:
Continuous development of the 4.4 litre V8 Bi-Turbo engine has resulted in a number of upgrades leading to a significant increase in power output. The engine now develops 441 kW (600 hp) at 6000 rpm and a maximum torque of 800 Nm between 3500 and 4500 rpm.

Two specifically constructed large diameter turbo-chargers operating in parallel are primarily responsible for achieving a high power and torque output over a very broad rpm range without sacrificing spontaneous throttle response at low rpm. The high-performance indirect inter-cooler system with a short intake system consists of a large-volume low-temperature inter-cooler and two engine-near inter-coolers. Additional oil and water coolers are located just behind the front spoiler and ensure the overall thermodynamic efficiency of the engine. Extensive optimisation of the air intake ducting and air filter housing leads to a substantial reduction of losses which together with an uprated fuel supply system results in the hike in output of 41 kW (60 hp) from previously 540 hp.

Inside the cylinders specific MAHLE pistons are designed to deal with temperatures and pressures associated with up to 1.4 bar charging and the engine’s 10.0:1 nominal compression ratio.

Despite its impressive performance characteristics and high specific power output long cruising ranges are achieveable thanks to a combined fuel consumption measured according to ECE norm of 9.4 to 10.4 l/100 km and CO2 emissions of 219 to 242 g/km, depending on the model.
However the big myth is forged internals fix everything... They can fail just as easily with a poor tune.

Does the n63 in the 2011 550i have forged internals?
