Advice Needed - M5 CP Exhaust on F10 550

About two months ago I purchased a full M5 competition package exhaust from a forum member. This is my first exhaust project so I decided to start with a more cost effective approach. (although that decision may haunt me).

I had the exhaust modified for my 550i xDrive and have mixed feelings with the sound so far. For me, the cold start up is great, the exhaust tone at idle is amazing but beyond that the exhaust sound is very un-tuned. An example is the shift between gears – the sound isn’t very crisp, it makes a blahtty sound – only way I can think to describe it. Just not well tuned like what I’m after…

That’s the background...

Before I pursue another exhaust option – I’m looking for help from the forum on what others have done to modify the M5 exhaust for our 550’s or any specific suggestions on what could be done.

I have been considering cutting out the M5 resonators and putting in the OEM 550 resonators (the Boysen’s) or looking at Vibrant Resonators? I don’t understand exhaust dynamics well enough to know what outcome this will produce in sound change. Another thought was to go back to the OEM exhaust, remove the mid-muffler and replace with an x-pipe, and use the M5 cans.

Any insight/comments are appreciated…

Get catted down pipes and it will sound amazing, but beware many dealers will void warranty if they see after market down pipes.

Just picked up a full competition exhaust from a 15 M5 for my 550. This has me second guessing getting it installed and going another direction now. Anyone have any other input besides aftermarket downpipess?

From what I've read you need the m5 down pipes to go with the m5 exhaust, or you can put on different mufflers.

Any advice from the forum on putting the OEM (Boysen) resonators into the M5 CP exhaust - as opposed to the resonator that is in line on the CP exhaust.

I'm not sure this will accomplish much if anything?

I'd like to do some mod's on this exhaust and willing to try a few things out just not sure where to make the changes.

Hello Ryan,
I had your same setup before coupling with M5 Down Pipes.
I hated every moment of that Raspy obnoxious sound. I ended up installing four additional Vibrant performance 3" resonators.
Two 18" and two 12" in back. The car sounds like a true V8 Sports car. It is intoxicating. Hope this helps.
