Non-RFT tire voids warranty?

I received my 2013 535i Msport, which came with Bridgestone Turanzas summer RFT. My dealer was trying to sell me the wheel & tire insurance and I told them I was considering swapping for non-rft (maybe Toyo Proxes 4 Plus). The business/finance manager said I could void out warranty if I do that. Is there any truth to that or is he trying to scare me into buying insurance? It's a 3-year lease if that matters. Thanks in advance

Though Im not an expert or the official word in this,
I could just share my experience. I bought the insurance
when I bought the car. Within a week I changed my rims as well.
Few months into the car, I hit a famous LA crater after our
first major rain storm. I shredded tire (non run flat) and cracked
the rim. Both nonrepairable. My selling dealer, as expected,
wanted to do nothing for me (even though they said it wouldnt
be a problem with aftermarkets). The dealer by my office took my car,
ordered a new wheel and tire (MRR and Nitto NT555) and installed
them for me and it was covered by the wheel tire insurance. He said,
nowhere in the contract does it state that aftermarket is NOT covered.
Only stipulation is that the tires have to have a minimum depth to them
to be road worthy to be covered in case of damage, which makes sense.
You cant drive on bare slick tires and have a blow out and then have it all covered.

Same went with warranty of car. As long as you have a replacement tire that is of good quality and matching sizes, it will not affect warranty or anything of that matter.

Not True!
Swapped my RFT for Michelin PS AS, and i have been to dealership, serviced it at least 3 times, there was never a question about tires + warranty.
He is just trying to sell insurance to you!
I have 2011 550i with 19" rims, and I bought tires at costco wholesale, 20,000 miles later i still drive same tires, i'm sure another 5,000 miles can be done.

Good to know. I should have specified that I think he meant voiding the car's warranty. He told me some guy hit a huge pothole and damaged the suspension or something. But BMW didn't cover anything because he was using non-rft, which aren't designed for the car.

BMW voiding the warranty is certainly a possibility since the suspensions are design for runflat tires, although it is a very remote possibility. BMW would have to prove that the non-runflat tires cause the damage.

I believe the reverse is true. Tires are specified and designed to match the vehicle.

+1

I was speaking last week with a dealer here in the UK and he confirmed that a customer changed his run flats on a new M3 to normal and his insurance refused to pay out after he trashed the car. The insurance company said he changed the spec of the car...a hard lesson learnt !!

I heard you can get the Wheel and Tire insurance and then can choose to get a pro-rated refund if you choose to cancel it? So it couldn't hurt to get it and then review the fine print and finally decide if you plan to keep it.

Technically, if you hit something while driving and you got crazy damage on your car... isn't that what comp/collusion is for if no one else will fix it???

Thats nuts. They have to cover it. You shouldnt drink and drive, but many people still do and get popped for it and some wreck. Insurance should cover you but they will drop you after.

What I took from your original comment was that the suspension was designed for run-flat tires, only. I do not believe that to be the case. Tire Manufacturers take BMW size and performance criteria and make tires for BMW and the general market. Those tires are not limited to run-flats. Other than the ability of run-flats to withstand loss of pressure and subsequently function for a limited mileage range at reduced speed, run-flats do not perform as well as non run-flat tires.

If I misinterpreted your post I apologize.

If the load rating matches I think your hard pressed to say RFT or not can cause warranty issues. Tire and wheel warranty are not worth it in my opinion. I have always declined it because you can get the tire coverage from discount tire for $50 a tire and the likelihood of taking out a wheel is slim, buy a used one to replace and your still under the cost of the warranty.

One mans opinion I guess but the dealer sounds like they are BS
