Tire suggestion for 535i

Looking for tire recommendations for a stock 2013 535i 6mt.... These will be on 19" oem style 349 wheels 8.5" front, 9" rear. Mostly drive around town with some highway driving mixed in. I could do a summer only setup as I've got the 18s on crappy runflats that I could use in the winter. Really need a tire that tracks well on the highway.

Do you really put a Michelin Pilot 4S on a 535i? That seems to be the holy grail of summer tires, but wondering if it is too aggressive and wondering if they would be too twitchy on the highway.

There will eventually be Eibach or similar springs (1" drop or less) and Koni Sports or Bilstein B4 which is (10% stiffer).

Any recommendations appreciated. Thanks.

I've just put on 20" Michelin PS4S on my F10, and they're great. But I can't find the PS4S in 245/40/19.

But Michelin also has som tires called PS4 on your sizes, I'd recommend those.

I will be - I'm changing my summer set up from Goodyear LS2 runflats to PS4S conventional tires. The weather simply hasn't allowed me to put them on yet (ice storm coming this weekend).

I know it's overkill, but I have done sway bar upgrades and plan to do KWv3s, maybe this summer. I've been running UHP tires as summer packages on my daily drivers for decades now and I like the precision, confidence and loads of grip. Grip in the rain especially.

When pricing things out, I discovered that "acceptable" (something like Michelin Pilot A/S 3+) would run just over CAD$300 per corner, and I could have PS4S for CAD $380 per corner. For that difference I just went with the PS4S, especially considering that I heard that more recent Pilot A/S 3 were redesigned more towards winter again instead of being a pretty great, durable 3 season tire. I have dedicated winter tires so I don't need that as part of my summer tire equation at all.

I do wish that one could get new, but "obsolete" UHP tires like PS2s at a much lower price point, but I'm sure that would really eat into PS4S sales so it would never happen.

Looking at Michelin homepage, i can't find the PS4S in 245/40/19.
Are you sure you have the PS4S and not the PS4?

Yes - but I see your profile says you're in Norway. From some marketing fluff I read, the PS4 is more a European market tire, and the PS4S replaces the PSS.

Yes - positive mine are PS4S. I don't know if I could get PS4s if I tried

I went with Michelin a/s 3+ as an all year around tires. Living up in the Pacific northwest we get all kinds of weather from sunny to snow. These tires are hands down of the best, there is just soo much grip. And after removing my run-flats for these, the ride was much smoother.

FWIW: In Chicago the 3+ is iffy for snow, I only run mine for three seasons.

Good luck.

Having lived in NE OH, I would rec. going AS. Trying to time winter is always a gamble. I've been unexpectedly caught (a few times) with summers in winter-like conditions.

I recently purchased Conti DWS 06 AS tires, and am impressed. Not as hard as expected (considering they are 20s). Very comfortable on long drives. No noticeable tire noise. Great treadwear rating. If I were back in OH, I would likely purchase these instead of dedicated summers. For OH winters, I ran a dedicated set with Mich X-Ice.

Got around to installing staggered 19" Michelin PS4S tires this weekend. Compared to the stock 18" Conti SSR RF, the PS4S really seems to stick better. Its hard to tell because they still have the mold release that is kind-of waxy. Sound wise, they are just a little bit louder, but the sound is a generic white noise, no whining or thrumming. Really broken pavement has a thumpy sound, but not really bad, just more noticeable in terms of sound. Impacts over things like tar strips and cracks in the pavement are noticeably less. Steering feel seems noticeably better, steering weight is a little heavier, which in my case is good. Highway tracking is very good - a bit better than the SSR. I'll know more when they break in, but so far they are great, and my assumption that a 4S is too much of a performance tire for the F10 seems false.

I installed these on BMW individual 349 LA wheels, 8.5x19 fronts, 9x19 rears. Tires are 245/40 and 275/35.

A little more on the Pilot Sport 4S - starting to break the tires in... Even going from 18 to 19, these are softer on expansion joints, tar strips, pot holes and most types of bumps than the Conti SSR RFs that come with the car. The highway ride is luxury - very smooth with still good left right response and excellent tracking. I have not noticed any wind drift on the highway, so it seems the sidewalls have some good lateral stability like a RF does. These are also the *roundest* tires I've had on a vehicle - zero vibration at any speed, and they all road force balanced to under 10lbs. Steering feel still lacking on the F10, but definitely a step better with these tires, the return to center is a little more natural feeling and not as notchy. The overall noise level might be a smidgen higher than a young SSR RF, but its close and not very noticeable and not humming or thrumming or any objectionable noise. These are a great upgrade to any stock F10 that will not see snow and are soft enough to not upset the wife and controlled enough to have fun.

+1 about the pilot 4s. Just got a set installed Friday. Probably one of the best choices for the f10. Hopefully they don't wear down too quickly

Continental EXTREME CONTACT DWS 06 are great all around tires and are just a little over $200 per tire. I drive very agressive and they hold well, on my second set.

I use Conti Extreme Contact DWS for the winter and just did a track day on Firestone's Firehawk Indy 500 (340 rated) and they held up great. I exepect to get 2 summers out of them including 5-7 track days. Much cheaper alternative to some other high performance summer brands. I posted a few videos in the Pics/Video section as well...
