Retrofit M Sport Steering wheel in F07 SE

Is it possible to retrofit the M Sport Steering Wheel for the F07?
Have the F07 SE with the multi functional steering wheel but prefer the thicker M Sport multi function steering wheel. Wonder if this can be retrofitted - is it a simple swap and does it need re-coding?

I know there is an aftermarket steering wheel out there for the F10 (I'll dig for where I saw it) so it is possible. I think it would pricey though and probably not DIY.

Here is one thread on it:

and a video how to...

In many other markets, you can order the sport steering wheel as an option with any version of the GT (if it didn't already come with it). So, yes, it can be done, but I expect it would be expensive. I'm not sure if the airbag is the same. It probably wouldn't require any recoding, but I'm not 100% confident in that. The US doesn't offer the laundry list of option choices that you can get in Germany. I'm not sure why, especially if the customer is willing to wait for a custom ordered one. For example, in Germany, the stock vehicle has the panoramic sunroof as optional, as are leather seats. It would be nice to pick and choose more than is allowed here now. I can easily see the problems with dealers not wanting to deal with picking the flavor of the day that will sell, but for a customer that knows what they want, I'd say let them!

Replaced with M Wheel

Yes, I have just done the changeover.

Originally, BMW told me it could not be done and that the multi-function buttons on the steering wheel would not work if I replaced the original slim steering wheel with and M wheel. The reason they stated was that the vehicle electrical system would not recognize the different wheel.

This did not sound right to me and, in fact, turned out to be complete rubbish.

I bought an M wheel and airbag and fitted it myself. Not problems at all, everything works Now need to see if I can get the gear change paddles to work as they were not fitted on the original.

Here is a youtube vid link showing the process:

Hi Philip. Did u get the paddle shifters to work? I've just bought a 2011 535GT with stock non-paddle shift wheel. I've found a replacement wheel with all the features; heated, lane departure etc and paddle shift. I intend to replace in my vehicle shortly, but was curious if you required coding to get paddle shift to work? Thanks!

In the past BMW has not associated the heated wheel with a Sport wheel. i.e. if you want paddles, you have to give up heating. If you notice in the video there are no spare sockets for the paddles to connect to.

Hi Chris,

Unless I was mislead, I just bought and have received a paddle shift sport wheel (like the one in the pic above) steering wheel which has lane departure, heated, etc..... They specifically mentioned heated on eBay ad..... steering wheel came out of Europe; has ///M logo (factory installed; not aftermarket) all all the features mine currently has.... pics with red background are from eBay ad and one with carpeting in background I just took....

Soon time to update profile pic.... e90 being replaced by 535GT..... picking up today or Monday....

Hey Nachos23, were you able to retrofit the M Sport wheel on your GT? I'm interested in this mod myself and would like to know if you need to replace the airbag also. My GT came with a standard wheel (thinner and no thumb rest). Also, will it require coding if you replace the airbag?

Thanks!

Hi Carlos....

Yes sir works perfectly. I had to code the airbag in my case because the wheel I bought came from Latvia (price was excellent) so had a single stage European airbag vs dual stage used here .....if you bought North American airbag no coding would be required for airbag.... that was the easy part anyway... got that coded in 5 mins...

Getting paddleshifts working took a little bit more programming but they work great now....

I had specific questions Shawn was able to provide the coding parameters to make it work here: http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=696113

Installed....

Added some Carbon accents as well:

not carbon look.... real carbon fiber cloth over the stock shifter.....

I do carbon parts as a hobby..... use the stock part, add carbon cloth using resin to the cover (4-5 coats of resin), sanding, clear coat and it's done.... Just bought 535GT before holidays, so first part I've done for it so far..... My interior is getting done when it slows down in the summer..

Original look:

chrome trim removed, sanded and painted black:

after several coats of resin and almost ready for clear coat:

After my buddy sprayed clear coat for me:

Done:

Installed:
