I checked the adaptor for my iPhone4 at the dealer last week.

The phone did not fit in with the protection case on.

I'm being charged £72.50 incl VAT for the 84 21 2 199 392 media iPhone 4 adapter. And they say they can get it no problem. I'm asking them to double check, as it seems too cheap

....are they sure that is the full media adaptor??...as you say seems a bit cheap?

As I thought, it was the wrong one. £120+ for the correct one, and no availability until July due to the recall because of overheating. I believe the snap-in adapter (xxx 392) is required for BMW apps option 6NR to work at all.... according to BMW's literature anyway.

I've complained to BMW UK to see if they will pay for it or at least part, as I'll have paid for £400 of options which will only at least partially work for a few months as my car comes the week after next. This becuase they are now advertising the 6NR option in the latest brochure and the 'amazing integration' with iPhone 3GS/4.

What's the point? The new IPhone will be out in July. Maybe they will have the IPhone 5 cradle before the IPhone 4 cradle

...guessed as much!...joke really but suppose as they have had to recall etc due to overheating then we are going to have to wait

Did your dealer say they could order you one now so you can get one as soon as available?

Suppose it will give us something else to look forward too after a few months once the new car honeymoon has started to fade?

I'm still on an iPhone 3GS is there a snap-in adaptor for that which is available?

Yes there are adapters available for the iPhone 3GS. If your car was build after october 2010, then make sure you get the "media" adapter. This is the one that works on the newer cars.

I got one and it works great.

Change of plan due to iPhone 3GS meeting its maker. Tried to get replacement but only 8GB available now - so now got an iPhone 4.

Which I think brings its own set of problems.

I'm presuming iPhone 4 adapter still not available?

In which case I guess I'll just connect with the white Apple lead. What functionality will I miss out on compared to what I've ordered?

Looking at July for the cradle that's compatible with 6NR and 6NF.

What you will lose by using the apple cable is:

Apple Plugin media play - i.e. video to iDrive
Antenna use via inductive coupling

I'm finding the BMW Connected app works fine for me via an Apple USB cable, as does album art, etc.

Very unlkely. iPhone 5 will be out closer to the holidays at best... http://www.bizjournals.com/sanjose/n...e-5-debut.html. Hopefully they'll at least not tweak the hardware so the new version will still fit into the iPhone 4 snap-in.

However, I have been informed by BMW customer services that because my car has come with a '6VC Combox Controller' I cannot install a media cradle for any Apple telephone.

Customer services have informed me that the Combox Controler will not speak to the Apple!

Have mine for one week now. It doesn't work quite well. Iphone gets disconnected all the time, and after working one hour, the iphone get's really hot.

I had mine for about a month. It works as advertised. It does got hot; hence, the reason for the microfan.

I was talking to a dealer tech this week that suggested the media cradle will work in any car fitted with the combox controller but obviously its use is limited if you've not got the 6NR option. he advised that if you've not got 6NR you may as well buy the cheaper non-media cradle.

he was very sceptical about rumours that 6NR could be retrofitted easily, he said the software could be done but he said cars fitted with 6NR have additional "FASBus"? cabling between the cradle and the i-drive unit to allow it to carry ipod out signals. He said cars without 6NR (even combox cars) don't have that cabling.

If all this is true the retrofit would need to include this cabling it seems, tech guy didn't seem to think that would be that easy a job and could be prohibitively expensive.

is there anyone on here that has the media cradle fitted to a car without 6NR? does it do anything useful other than charge the phone and allow you to use the roof antenna/shark fin?

is it only 6NR that gives the iPod style interface on the i-drive screen??? or will the media cradle do that for cars without 6NR?
