BMW Revises Recommended Oil Change Intervals to 10,000 Miles for 2014+ 5 Series
BIMMERPOST NEWS BMW Revises Recommended Oil Change Intervals to 10,000 Miles for 2014+ Models BMW has changed its long time recommended oil change mileage intervals for all 2014 models and beyond. The changes apply to all vehicles produced from July 2013 on. Previously, BMW recommended a 15,000 mile / 24 month Condition Based Service interval, but as of July 2013, the new basic interval will be every 10,000 miles / 12 months. This applies to both gasoline and diesel models. The Z4 roadster, M5/M6 and ActiveHybrids have some special recommendations, which you can see in the announcement and charts below. |

I dont think it applies to the vehicles build before 7/13. I wonder why BMW change their oil change interval. Anyone know if they change the inteval in Europe as well?

If the engines have not changed since the f10 came out, you would assume that this would apply to earlier cars as well
The cynical in me thinks they realised that 15000 miles is too long and so they are correcting their 'mistake'. If that's not the case , what's changed in the 2014 models to dictate what is quite a big change in service intervals. Very interesting indeed, I can this thread lasting for quite some time! |

If I am right, then you can start to quantify the "cost" of using ASS. That's a huge amount of wasted oil. |

What's interesting is it says that all models are having the change. The 550i doesn't have ASS and wouldn't that mean that ASS doesn't play into this? Also it was for sure in vehicles before July, 2013. Makes me wonder how hard I should push my dealer on my 2013 changes.

This is bullcrap. CLEARLY this is because a 15,000 mile/24 month interval is way too long and potentially damaging. BMW tried to cheap out by doing that since they picked up the bill and are probably realizing the long term damage they will do to these care therefore how the cars age therefore future owner sentiment.
If they don't honor this with previous models they're giving us a big fat middle finger. I can already see an issue in a few months when my car will be hitting the 1 year mark from its original build date (probably gonna happen before the 10K mark) and I am wanting to get my "free" oil change due to being at such a long period of time. I'm not waiting 15,000 miles or 2 years to do it, even if it's a Leased car (consider it my good deed for the future owner/s if I don't keep the car myself after the lease, not to mention I want my car performing at its peak during my time with it, not running on old break-in oil). At the same time, I'm not paying for it when BMW is already revising their intervals.

My dealer has always changed mine once per year (on my previous vehicles - haven't had this one a year yet) even if it wasn't due for a change according to the service monitor...

My Dealer also does the oil change once a year even though I only drive 10K or so a year. I guess that's their policy. |

Its the low mileage free oil change, if you hit 12 months and the mileage is up yet, they will change it for free and they will change it again when the mileage indicator is up.

My 2013 750li has ASS. Anyway, I am saying bmw discovered the engines are getting beat up at CPO, so they want to protect cars going forward. The 15k interval has been around for years. Why change? Maybe ASS has caused a problem in the field. |

I believe ASS wasn't available with the pre-'13 N63 550's. The '14+ models with the N63tu engines will have it.

What about my 2014 LCI that finished production on 6/29/2013?
I know, I need to look at that option code in this press release. Just pointing out the typical lack of precision in their publications. |

I wonder if this opens BMW up to future claims for anyone that has engine problems after warranty? If your BMW's engine was maintained under the 15k plan and your engine has a problem, can't one now claim it was BMW's fault for having 15k interval? One could say that BMW recognised 15k was insufficient since BMW transitioned to 10k miles. |

Good point^^. BMW really screwed previous buyers over with such a long interval. 2 years is too long, plain and simple, which is more telling than 15K miles which isn't too long in itself if you compare to other cars, but does seem on the high side regardless.

I think most dealerships offer a courtesy oil change at 1 year regardless of milleage, but you're right that BMW screwed owners by even suggesting the 2 year interval.
