When do I need to replace brake pads?

I got this warning showing in the idrive and a red brake light on the dash. Do I need to change my pads now or is there an actual brake pad sensor light that will turn on like in older BMW?

can you post a picture of your brakes front/rear?

look in between your wheel at an angle inside the caliper. you will see the brake pad metal part and then the remaining pad material directly above. how much is left.

what do your rotors look like? are they shiny and smooth with no score marks? any wear on the outer edges?

If you received that message your car already tripped the brake pad sensor, get it done asap.

Now unless your planning on replacing your sensor when it gets low enough to damage it as well.

I got that warning whilst on a trip. I went to the nearest dealer (Monterey) and had them check it out. Turned out to be a false warning as they said I had of pad left. If it matters, I had just used the parking brake a lot.
