Retrofit Sun Protection Glass Option - anyone done it?

Hi all

The order for my F10 has already been placed with the leasing company and we are apparently beyond the point where I can modify my order... This is a real shame as I really want to get the Sun Protection Glass option.

I realize there are a huge number of aftermarket tints out there, but my question is, has anyone actually taken their car to the BMW dealer to get either the Sun Protection Glass option retro-fitted or had the windows tinted by the BMW dealer?

I just want to figure out what my options are and what the likely costs are likely to be. I am in the UK, so UK experiences of the above would help

Cheers

Ash

I had it factory fitted as its the unit that is tinted not tape or film applied. BMW dealer wont do it but they will recommend a local company. With local company you get to choose the shade where as BMW Europe only have 2 options.

Perhaps Autoglass stock it? Otherwise your dealer should be able to obtain and/or install - though it will be far more expensive than film tinting.

Thanks for the replies... BMW have told me the item can be retrofitted for the same cost as in the brochure (£295 Inc VAT).

I might just go for that as that approach won't give me the insurance headache that an aftermarket tint will (company car).

Cheers!

This will still be an aftermarket tint using film. To replace the glass with OEM sun protection would cost substantially more. I suggest you ask them to clarify.

Plus you still have to tell your insurance company if it is a factory extra. You only do not need to tell them if it is part of say the M sport pack which this is not.

Thanks for the heads up - I will double check with them. £295 for an aftermarket tint is a rip-off to say the least.

Be grateful to hear on this as I'm in exactly the same position and thinking of getting it done at the dealers prior to taking delivery on 01/03.

One other consideration I'm toying with is adding the whitelines (deep sea blue car), know it's personal choice but would be interested to hear anyone elses opinion.

Deejaygee I owe you a virtual pint! :-)

As predicted, they were offering an aftermarket tint service via a third party company for £295. They did offer OEM colored glass supplied and fitted for £1000 :-o

I have decided to leave it fir now and to get the windows tinted post-delivery as soon as I can locate a reputable specialist...

Does anyone know of a reliable and professional tinter near the Twickenham area?

Glad you got the situation clarified.

I can recommend Pentagon Glass probably the best in the business. See here for their website:

I had my old E90 done by them. Very good indeed.

sun protection glass

If you have the HUD display option and not the sun protection glass (yet) then I would hold off...

I ordered mine with the HUD and sun protection glass and took delivery in June 2010. I'm not convinced that the sun protection glass makes any difference, but putting that aside for a moment, what I did find was much more alarming.

In heavy rain, at night, when there are strong low lights on the horizon, such as those from the setting or rising sun, or more especially from oncoming trucks, run marks, like someone has allowed dirty treacle to congeal on the glass and then been unable to remove all trace of it, appear on the glass. I say on the glass, but as I found out, these marks are IN the glass.

My dealer was able to replicate the problem in the car wash with someone holding a bright torch at head height from about 4m in front of the car... So, I was not imagining it!! And I tried detailing and found that no-one could remove it from the outside or inside of the glass. It really was INSIDE the glass.

The dealer has since changed the glass 3 times. The problem is still there, so it must be a manufacturing problem. The dealer says that it's likely the combination of HUD and sun protection options that cause the problem.

Finally I suggested downgrading to the normal non-sun-protection glass. I got my car back on Saturday and haven't had a chance to drive it at night in the rain yet to see if it's any better.

But, as I say, if you have HUD then you may not want to change to sun-protection glass quite yet!

The Sun Protection Glass is on 3 rear windows (doors and rear screen) behind the B pillar and is a mid-smoke coloured glass, not a tint film. It is UV protected and very effective in all but very low light in certain seasons.

It should have no effect on the HUD (have both options specified on my 6GC) at all.

I have not noticed any effect on mobile signals at all.

As a factory fitted option, you don't have to report it specifically to your insurance company. That being said as all BMW models since 2012 have had a mild green-tint applied to all glass (except windscreen on HUD specified models), adding any film to the front door windows will almost certainly make them illegal, and may void insurance if found to be a cause of accident, for example, if entering a main road.

Does anyone know of a good specialist for this in the Southampton/Winchester area?
