Pure Turbos N55 Stage I upgraded turbo

Haven't seen any discussion on this board regarding this upgrade. This is a fairly hot topic in the E90 N55 section.

Results so far on 91-octane pump gas show about 40 wheel horsepower bump with no change in boost pressure. Results on an ethanol mix with custom JB4 mapping by Terry are showing an extra 70 wheel horsepower at 6,000+ RPM.

Looks to be a very nice option for the $1,000 asking price. Supposedly will work on any N55 produced prior to July 2013.

Interesting, but from the dyno graph it doesn't really appear to do anything until around 4750rpm.

Unfortunately what works for the 3 series will not work for the f10 535s. Getting programming to work correctly is very very hard and has been limited for some time now and don't really see many more upgrades for us in the near future.

There is a guy running one on a 6-series.

Just checked that out. That seems uber beta right now, I would wait a long while before being the guinea pig on that.

You really can't have your cake and eat it too when upgrading to larger turbochargers. When you start going bigger, you must make some sacrifices in low-end response to gain top-end power.

Have you ever driven or ridden in a very high (500+) horsepower 4-cylinder turbocharged car? If you are not in the right gear with the revs up, a stock Honda Civic will show you tail lights. Even the big single turbo N54-powered cars making 600-700WHP don't really start moving until well past 3,000 RPM. It doesn't stop these cars from running 130+mph in 1/4 mile or under 7 seconds from 60-130mph. You just have to be in the right gear to take advantage of the power band.

This upgrade is very mild and the fact that nothing is lost below 4,500 RPM while picking up 40-50WHP up top is actually quite nice.

My only other turbo experience is a Skyline GTR I drove and tracked for a few years in England, so no big turbos, the was the GTS-T drivers. But I am well aware of the issue (watch the Top Gear review of the Evo VIII). My point (unsaid) is that in daily driving you would have to be revving the nuts off it to ever see any of the benefits. No doubt it will have effects at the drag strip or if you are routinely running the car to redline, but there is no gain at all for normal driving conditions.

That's quite funny. Prior to my last post I was searching to see if I could find that Top Gear video where they ran the EVO in its top gear against something slow and watched it walk away until boost built.

You would be suprised how quickly you adapt to the change in power band. With an auto transmission there's really no adaptation. Just put your right foot down.

Turbo upgrades are certainly not for everyone, but for those that want a car that is truly fast versus one that just feels fast, it's the only path (speaking specifically to the N55.)

The counterpoint to your point is you really aren't giving up anything for "normal driving" either with this particular upgrade and the extra headroom is there for when you can tap into it; perhaps you cannot or don't have a desire. I figured there may be some F10 535i owner's that shared my interest. I currently drive a 2008 335i running a custom tune and E50 for fuel. It makes over 400 WHP and is considerably lighter than a F10. I mash the throttle and run it to redline through at least a couple of gears almost every time I drive it.

Hi guys, i have this turbo on my f20 m135i for 3 months now. Tune is done with jb4 only. The car runs great. Power delivery under 3k rpm is same as stock. Once over 4k the car really starts to shine. While previously i had to shift at 5800 rpm i can now shift at 6500 rpm again because the power in that rpm range is awesome. I can only recommend this product. Great price and good support from vendor.

If you have more questions feel free to ask.
