What to do?
F10 2011 engine having additional sounds. Took it to a very reliable independent BMW mechanic who says it is timing chain that has become lax. To repair now is £1200.00 and if it snaps then the cost is £4000.00. The car is July 2011 build, amongst the ones said by BMW not to need any Timing chain adjustment after the scandal of timing chain problems. Unfortunately discontinued BMW insured warranty few months ago
This car is already penciled to be part exchanged for G30 in March. What to do? By the way there are heavy discounts on heavily loaded infinity TechSport Q70S. Monthly payment would be like 3/5 of the G30 that could be ready to be driven away in 2 days What would you do? |

If the car has been serviced continuously by BMW and the warranty has just expired then it may be worth asking BMW for goodwill if the repair is fault related
Failing that I would not pay to fix it if a new car could be a few months away. No matter what £1200 is a lot of money. Stick to premium brands as you won't be happy with a lower quality experience |

Be very careful with this approach. Once you have brought the fault to BMW's attention the dealer you are trading the car in at is very likely to be aware of it too. He may well not be prepared to do the deal of the G30 you had agreed on.

Thanks All. I would drive it as little as possible and then trade it in as planned. It is not showing any errors in idrive. I would stick with G30, nobody else including wife and children seem to like infinity.

My car F10 520D is July 2011 build with N47D20O1 engine and the timing chain is currently making horrible noise both BMW dealer technician and indy have said the noise is due to the dreaded timing chain. Based on the information above, I had always believed timing chain problem would not affect my car as it was produced after March 2011.
To make matter worse as I mentioned in my earlier thread I am waiting for my G30 order. This incident is making me lose faith in BMW and I am not sure whether I should not cancel my G30 order. Especially as the dealer now seems to be back tracking on the guarantee value for my F10. The indy says it is going to cost £1200.00 and BMW says about £2000.00 and would not be able to ask for BMW goodwill contribution until they have stripped the engine and officially diagnose the fault So which way should I go for repair? Indy or BMW dealer? Should I cancel my G30 order as I tend to hold to my cars for long periods |

Difficult to advise anyone else, but if I was put off BMW by the issues I've had over the years, I'd not be driving one now. But I'd have missed some of the best driving years with BMW, and always been thinking, "I could have taken the risk and enjoyed a BMW rather than drive something else I don't really want". If I'd moved on, I'd be continually pondering, "why am I in this car?" You do have some levers here. If your BMW garage don't know a timing chain issue by now, they are hopeless. IMO, totally incompetent! Yes, they may have to take it apart to get BMW on the case. If you are buying a new G30, they ought to pull out all the stops the get it sorted, with a decent dose of goodwill from BMW, or they are not worth their salt. They should be on your side, inspire confidence, to get you into a new car as a happy customer. |

Thank you HighlandPete, my head says I should head to a more reliable brand such as lexus or infinity whilst my heart is still with BMW. For personal reasons I don't do warranty and insurance except when compulsory and I hate non-ending PCPs. However I would not be comfortable keeping a BMW car without any form of insurance/extended warranty in the future. This particular car has full BMW service history.
I had used Mercedes and Honda car with mileage reaching 170,000 miles without any engine issues apart from wear and tear. Unfortunately, before settling for G30 I test drove Mercedes C class 250D and Lexus IS and did not like them as well as E-Class. Should I head to Audi? How reliable are their diesel engines? Are they nice to drive? Last edited by babaikram; 02-05-2017 at 03:44 PM.. |

Having bought an Audi for my other half and having had no experience of them until that point, they are way better than you expect. If you like your BMW you will probably like an Audi but if you love your BMW you will probably still only like an Audi.

I must agree the fit and finish are in decline on most models to date, were as companies like KIA are going "up market" and including all extra's in the purchase price.
I am thinking of a change this next time round to a cheaper option with just as much working kit for 20K less.

Can you find a review that doesn't say it is not a patch on a BMW, Mercedes or Audi? Autoexpress.co.uk (I know) compared the A6 against it and used the expression "ran rings around it". The concensus among motoring journalists is that it isn't in the same league as a 5 series.
Each to their own but an extended test drive would be a good idea. |
