I have a 2013 550 and have had no issues so far (knocking on wood!). Has 21,000 miles on it. I know there are others on here that have though.

Most of the problems are on the older 10-12 550's and they were fixed for free under service bulletins or a "non recall" recall. I'm not sure if this is your first BMW but, what ever you decide don't ever buy a BMW without a good warranty especially this one, mine has over 14 computers to go bad and I've had the fuel pumps replaced, right front shock and left rear, fuel injectors, timing chains, mass airflow sensors plus more stuff all under warranty or service bulletins. BMW atleast takes care of their cars and customers, atleast they did my used warrantied '11 550i Msport. Good luck man it's a badass car.

Oops I just noticed you have a '14 535xi, so you should know bmws and I assume you want more power with the v8 twin turbo. Atleast look at a n63tu which can be tuned, I think a '13 can be.

Here's a thread on the N63 recalls.
http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=817273

I would steer clear of the N63. Sadly, it's a poorly designed engine that has been very problematic. The modified version (N63tu) was introduced with the 2014 model year which appears to be a somewhat better design.
Would an Audi S6 work for you?

35k and no problems! It's a great engine in many ways, especially the updated one! You will enjoy the extra power of the TTV8.

I have a 2011 550 msport. I love it. The only time I've had problems is when I tried to run it with the BMS stage 2, which caused coils to fail. I backed it down to stage 1 and no problems.

Nearly 60k miles on mine.

Agree with Russkey. 40,000+ miles and no problems at all.

Wonderful engine to drive. I was not satisfied with the 535 in test drives.

That said, I suspect I will purchase an extended warranty when my factory protection expires.

75k miles on my 2012 550i and not a single problem with the engine per se. Yes, I have had the CCP performed. I was very impressed with the way BMW handled the CCP, essentially admitting the N63 engine was having problems, so, lets fix it. My car was out of warranty (>50k miles) when the recall/CCP was instigated; no cost to me though.

I had a 2012 535 6-speed and found it didn't quite have the edge my wife's 2008 535 6-speed wagon has. Don't get me wrong... it was a perfectly "nice" car.

The 550i is wicked fun. Mine's been great. So great I'll happily give it whatever it demands, but so far its been just fine.

Take an hour or two and read many threads here and on the other BMW popular site, as well as do some google search's.
Obviously much has been written about it. Obviously depreciation is an issue that is both advantageous and not if you consider all the ramifications. Maybe how long you plan on owning the car might decide for you.

I shopped and made my choice based on my own impressions for the model year and what I wanted to spend. I suppose we can all defend our choice and also look for validation at the same time. That is not always advice your seeking.

But take the time to learn what you are, or are not getting into regarding the core problems and what the fix was. Informed you'll be making a great decisions either way!

Fair point Nalod, but thousands of happy 550i, 750i, and X5 drivers don't seek forums like this one to post about problems they don't have. Nobody thinks these cars are Hondas, but I believe the sample-set of responses is heavily skewed towards the negatives.

Purchased an n63 then few weeks later I found about the n63 recall. Scared me a bit because I'm out of warranty. Was thinking about trading in the car.

Bought it at 56k miles. I'm at 69k miles now with no problems. Changed ignition coils and spark plugs and car runs smooth as butter. I don't regret getting this car at all. Just make sure the car had the n63 ccp done and you should be good man.

I've been running bms stage 1 for bout 8k miles, no issues there as well.

My take is to fully understand the running costs of any car you buy and what one's exposure is to what can go wrong.
There are more happy owners than unhappy ones and we all know happy people don't complain!!!

It is my understanding that often we get into testosterone induced power purchases which can influence our decisions.

I had my CCP done about this time last year, or even earlier spring.

Zero problems since then. However if you're getting into one now, buy one with the -TU monikered engine as it doesn't (yet) have the problems of the original, has more HP and TQ, and can be flash tuned. Can't miss. This car is a beast. I absolutely love mine.

Listen to this man.
Friend is a Service Manager. Advised me not to purchase car with N63. They get many complaints with these engines. If you can't avoid it than test drive one with the recall done and still with warranty otherwise avoid.

N63TU is a much better option, especially because of its tune ability.

You drive a 435? Did you own a N63 before?

OP the N63 with CCP seems to take care of a lot of issues but you still have the battery being chewed up every year to year and half, you have higher oil change intervals. I suggest getting a 2014+ model, you can get a N63 pretty cheap these days but N63TU is simply much better.

I actually ordered a 435 but BMW made a mistake on the car so will wait to order a 440xi Gran Coupe instead.
Before I bought the 440xi GC I actually looked at getting the 535 in 2014 but found power to be lacking so looked at the 2013 550 demo. Test drove the demo and feel something not right so I told the owner something is wrong with the car. He checked the car and asked me back to test drive it again and I told him still something isn't right with the engine. Six months later.......TSB. The car only had about 25000km on it. I noticed something was wrong when you flat out accelerate and also when cruising to a more reasonable speed after the acceleration.
Did some research and talked to Customer Service Manager who was a friend and he confirmed the problems of the N63 is not just a myth. Before the TSB it was a huge headache for him.
He now deals with them on a daily basis in claims to BMW.
