In the market ...

Hi,

I've a 335D which I'm looking to swap and am considering a 535D as a replacement. Since ordering the 335 we've had two children which necessitates some back doors - that and I'd really like to be in something a bit newer than my 08 plate.

I'm looking at nearly new (<1 year old) in order to make a saving against brand new, and there are a few models out there.

Question - what should I be looking for in terms of "must haves" on the spec?

So far I've convinced myself I need an upgraded stereo, auto box, surround cameras and pro nav .. but is there something else cool I should be looking for?

I'm assuming they will be offering me something around the 18K mark for my current car (in sig), and looking to buy something around the 40-45K mark. I'd then be thinking of trying for something around 10% off their posted price.

Advice gratefully received

Visibility pack - adaptive lights are great. If you already have an e92 then you have xenons and if you got a F10 with standard halogens you'd notice how shite they are more than most.

Cheers.

Reading about Park Assist - that looks good for a laugh. Not sure I'd specifically look out for it, but having the car park itself sounds cool. I imagine it's one of these you-never-use-it-but-cool-to-show-your-mates features.

Also - on the used BMW site some cars say combined 46.3 and some 50.4 ... was there a change to the economy figures after a certain date?

I test-drove a car with the parking assist and it IS very cool and would get a "wow" from passengers... I considered specifying it but then decided that a) I'd never use it as I rarely need to parallel park in the first place, b) I can parallel park quite happily should the need arise and c) amazing though it is, it isn't perfect.

I'd consider that if you get a car with it then great but I wouldn't move it up the priority list. The surround cameras are much more useful IMO.

Garage List
Hi dodgy,
I have done the exact move that you are talking about. I went from an 07 335d E92 M Sport to a 60 535d M Sport. I got 15K for mine and the 535d cost 36K.
I hope to get rid of the thirsty brute of an X5 when the kids get older and make the 5 the family car.

I had pro logic hifi in my E92 and i found it great. Your individual audio is even better again - so you are really spoiled!

My 535d has standard sound and it is crap! I am however getting it upgraded at the moment by replacing all speakers, adding tweeters to the mirror backs and an amp to the boot. It should then be good enough.

You will notice the 5 a lot bigger to drive and will miss the rawness of your E92 especially if it was remapped like mine. No remaps available for the F10 yet unfortunately.

Anyway good luck in your quest as business or pro speakers are hard to find in used cars. Mine has silly things like 4 zone climate, full electric seats, and electric boot opening. I wish i could trade them for proper audio and a sunroof

Also as xenon says, Visibility pack is a must have and nav pro. I dont think i have seen one 535d in the Approved Used site without either though.

Adaptive bi-xenon lights are amazing, but if you rarely do any night driving on unlit country roads you won't realise the full benefit.
The most valued option I have on my 535d is Adaptive Drive+Variable Damper Control and it's something I alter to suit on just about every drive I take. It really does work extremely well, giving you everything from a plush ride over cobblestones and potholes in comfort mode, through to high speed cornering with virtually no body roll in sport and sport+. The 3 litre diesel packs a pretty hefty punch and the AD/VDC is a perfect match, along with the truly sublime 8 speed sport auto box.
Another significant option I'd recommend is the comfort seats; expensive yes, but worth every penny on anything more than a short trip.

Thanks for the tips.

There's a few on the site with BMW Business audio, but I've not seen any with the professional audio. How good/bad is the business? I think I'd have that as a minimum as I really will miss my current pro audio otherwise ...

I just have the bog standard audio in mine and I think it's perfectly fine. If I want to listen to hi-fi I do so in the comfort of my living room, which is free of distractions such as wind, road and drivetrain noise.

I agree - I've never really understood an obsession with in-car audio when it is, by definition, compromised anyway.

You're speaking to someone who paid two grand for their individual audio system in my 335d

My way of thinking was I want the best sound I can get. I traveled a lot, and music was my way to pass the time. I'd rather be able to enjoy it than constantly wish the system was a little better.

Sure, it's not an audiophile room - but then I don't get the time at home to sit and do nothing but listen to music. The car is/was my music room .. hence me being interested in paying out a little for a feature I'll use every single time I get into the thing.

That's fair enough, especially if nagging doubts prevent you from enjoying the music.

Off to see two of them tomorrow. Depending on how much I like it - and how much they are willing to wriggle on the price - I might be joining the club. Will let you know how it goes.

Annoying but the two cars I'm seeing are at different dealers, same ownership, but about 12 miles apart. Could be tricky to haggle with both. Not sure right now which car I prefer, they are almost identical but one is 1K more seemingly for 1 month newer and soft close doors (who specs those in?!). I think it'll come down to space grey vs black.
