Would you keep a 550i Dinan Stage 2 Past Warranty Period?
I have a 2011 550i with the Sport Package and Dinan Stage 2 with only about 17,750 miles on the vehicle. It turned 3 years old this past January. I am trying to decide if I should keep the car past the warranty period or sell several months prior to expiration of the warranty. I have kept the car in excellent condition and it has been a pleasure to drive. My main concern is keeping it past the warranty period and having a major problem down the road. Since I own the car outright, I have the option of selling the car and using the cash to lease a new 550i or an M5. Interested in hearing what other forum members suggest doing.

You're in Texas ... don't need the AWD like me ... so definitely get the M5 ... these cars have way too many expensive parts to fix out of warranty ... I would never buy one ... very happy getting a new lease every 3 years

Thanks for the replies. I am leaning towards an M5 lease from David M Aviles at Steve Thomas BMW. Sent him an email and replied with a very attractive lease offer.

M5 all the way. Like pillpusher said... If it wasn't for the need for x- drive, I'd have an M5 on order, not a 550ix.

That was what interior I ordered ... however my dealer screwed up my order and got me the dark wood instead of the anthracite ... I was heavily compensated for their error, and accepted the car despite the fact that it was not what I had wanted exactly ... so I'm trying to decide if I should just live with it for the next 2.5 years ... or swap out for the anthracite ... I can get new parts for a very reasonable price considering ... but not sure it's worth the trouble. |

No problem bud! Unfortunately, It wont be in early July when I actually take delivery. The wait is brutal. But it has given me time to gather my mods.

Get the M5 no question.
I would never want to keep any modern expensive German made car outside of the warranty period. Unless I have multiple cars to use and it is kept as my garage trophy car there is no chance in hell I would want to be blindsided with a 4-5 digit repair bill if something big decides to go. Alan

New Warranty
Why not just buy a new warranty from the dealer and not take a loss?

Best suggestion so far. Unless you do not mind the depreciation and spending big for a new (wonderful, I admit) car. If you are happy with your current car keep it another 3 years and save yourself a packet whilst enjoying a very nice, extremely capable car...

I think the problem of getting an extended warranty has to do with the Dinan Stage 2. If the car didn't have the Dinan Stage 2, then I could purchase an extended warranty. Dinan warranty is only good thru the original BMW warranty. If something goes wrong past the oririnal BMW warranty period, then the finger might be pointed towards Dinan as the cause. In that case, I could possibly be on the hook for a large repair bill.

Check out the post about my recent engine troubles. I'm not trying to be an alarmist or insinuate that this sort of thing is "bound to happen" if you decide to keep your vehicle, but this is an indication of the level of repair expense that can be incurred if a major problem is encountered. All of the various corrective actions that were taken during the month+ repair time were covered via warranty, so I don't know what the exact cost would have come to, but I expect it would have been around $20k.
This has convinced me that I won't be owning a vehicle of this type outside of some sort of warranty.
