LMFAO
A stock GT in lighter colors with 17" rims definitely looks terrible, but I think those guys wouldn't mind a modded one However, that list is a complete joke like @xMRV stated, honestly in my eyes the Mini Paceman is not a bad looking car at all.

No offense to anyone, but GT followed closely by an awkwardly proportioned X3 are the ugliest of the BMW lineup.
I am still having a hard time understanding the purpose of a GT (I guess just to be there in the lineup ). I understand touring (F11) or a proper SUV (F15), but what is a GT ? A 5 Series hatchback ? This car is too big to be hatch. 6 series GC can be considered an odd design too, but that's just a sexy fashion statement. Same with X6, not as utilitarian as X5, but again, great on the looks.

I'm not a fan of the GT at all even with mods. It's like putting lipstick on a pig. You know what they say about that. To each it's own. |

Agree. They need to send us the F11 here in the US and kill the F07.

Agreed. I stated my opinion in F10 FB page as well.

I'm glad BMW isn't stuck with producing cars that fit in age old sedan-coupe-SUV segments. The Japanese do that very well.
It's funny to me how there's such a focus on dropping suspension and the hilarious enthusiast fretting over 5/8 of an inch drop in the 704 suspension. For those who are tired of wallowing around in SUVs and carrying around a big empty box in the back, the GT is a welcome "tweener" design that provides luxury and performance together with utility. It's the only BMW of interest to me. As far as looks go, it's subjective and who cares? Minivans and wagons look ugly but people still want them. But as far as the questions of design and why, Chris Weil disagrees with you and explains here: Excerpt from: http://www.bmwism.com/bmws_designers.htm Christopher Weil (*1976) German designer raised in the mountain region of Bavaria, went to school (Grundschule) in Partenkirchen, completed the high school at Ettal (1994) and later studied at Pforzheim University of Applied Sciences in Design, Technology and Business (1996-2000 Master sponsored by BMW); directly after studies with BMW in Munich Weil designed the body of the BMW 5 series Gran Turismo; Weil says about Gran Turismo: "For the first time, we developed the car from the inside out. and BMW cars are defined by emotion. I think when you're looking at the car, any BMW, you're emotionally attached; in our view: BMW Gran Turismo is an innovative. and truly beautiful car, but it is also big and expensive; it does not sell because most of people with families who need this type of car cannot afford it, while people who can afford it, live another life and simply do not need a multifunctional car; some of the usual clients of the 7-series bought GT, while the real target group would be among the clients for lower models of the BMW 5 series" Weil is now a Senior Designer at BMW, he works on the Gran Turismo 3-series Last edited by ErnestHouse; 10-22-2013 at 05:35 AM.. |

i don't like the gt because i don't like station wagons and hatchbacks. the gt is the same thing but huge.
don't worry about it, for every person that doesn't like fast wagons, there are several other that do. just look at the hennessy cts-v wagon. i hate it no matter how fast it is but ppl nut over that thing every day. those same ppl would nut over your nicely done ride for sure. i respect what you've done even if it's not for my taste. ps- 50's thunder birds were once considered ugly. now ppl will pay big money for them.

I agree GT isn't the best design BMW has made, but an msport GT definitely helps. Or as Lacster said, an msport GT has a little more lipstick on it.

Certainly butt-ugly is in the eye of the beholder. But these lists are interesting. See number 10 and 45 here: http://www.edmunds.com/car-reviews/f...-all-time.html
Number 9 is interesting here: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/...?frame=2519007 This group is hilarious. How did I miss the 1990 Pontiac Trans Sport?! And the 1970 Gremlin is a classic: http://autos.yahoo.com/news/10-uglie....html?page=all I guess this all is to say who cares what some list puts together. If you like the GT, wonderful. I like the F10. Seems to be holding up well and will likely do so going forward. But man, where can I get a Pontiac Trans Sport!

As far as the OP article goes, ... well ... it's called Yahoo for a reason. :-)
Then there's the folks at Autotrader: "Pretty much every other 2013 BMW 5 Series GT review on the Internet will say something snarky about this car's styling, but not this one, folks. We're done poking fun at BMW's oddly shaped hatchback people mover like a playground bully. Why pick on the 5 Series GT just because it looks different? It may be unconventional, but, bottom line, this is one heckuva car." Of the car itself: "... the 5 Series GT boasts a world-class mix of refinement and practicality..... The handling's outstanding too, as is the finely crafted cabin. And with up to 63.6 cu ft of cargo space behind the front seats, the GT can haul as much as some crossover SUVs...The 5 Series Gran Turismo drives exactly like what it is, a tall 7 Series. We prefer the 7er's lower center of gravity, but we do appreciate the GT's commanding view of the road ahead. That's not to say that the Gran Turismo doesn't handle well; in fact, this is one of the best-handling family vehicles on the market, exhibiting remarkable cornering composure for something so big and heavy." And of the looks: "Of course, if you check the archives, you'll find that we had our own laugh at the GT's expense in last year's review ... we're holding our tongue this year, because when a car is this good, looks are almost beside the point. Forget the Aztek. The 2013 5 Series Gran Turismo is actually closer to being a cheaper, more practical Porsche. Proud new owners will be laughing all the way to the bank." There's more but you never hear anyone complaint about the uncomfortable rear seat and trunk space like you do of the 5 sedan. Last edited by ErnestHouse; 10-23-2013 at 03:31 PM.. |
