Your next 5 series - petrol or diesel ?

I know this is going to be about G30 cars but I'm asking UK members so would rather stick it here.

I think it's likely I'll order a new 5 series in about 6 months to a year, if the car is as good as it sounds when I get to test drive one.

But I'm torn between the 540i and 530d (both X-Drive). They're virtually the same price. If a 540d is added to the range, it will be quite a bit dearer and I don't think I need more than the 540i and 530d will give.

I'm leaning heavily towards the 540i, but it will be interesting to see just how quiet the 3 litre diesel is in the heavily soundproofed G30 engine bay.

You ?

Given how quiet the F10 30D is it can only get better, or so you would hope. Depends on your mileage really.

Anything over 15K a year I would go diesel

I am surprised how much quieter the 30D is compared to the 20D in the F10

I'm probably moving to petrol for my next car. Have a nasty feeling diesels are going to be the hot target for the chancellor very soon....

Having said that, M550d is on the cards if I can afford it! :-)

Totally agree, I'm going to have a petrol car next. Already switched my wife's diesel A Class for the 20i F48 X1. I'm currently leaning toward a Jaguar F Type, it would my first non-BMW in over 15 years...

I'd be tempted by the 540i, but I do 25,000 private miles a year (+business miles), so if I get a 5 Series again it's likely to be a 540d or M550d

As Martin says, it largely depends on your annual milage.
I went from a 535d F10 to a 640i F12 and much prefer the petrol. Ok, it doesn't have that amazing torque but it's very free revving and, IMO, more throttle responsive, not to mention that glorious exhaust note and silky smooth idle.
My last 640i had done about 33k miles when I traded it in for my new one and I was getting 35mpg on long runs.

They drive both engines here although the 540i isn't the xDrive model that will get in the UK

As I've posted on the G30 forums, I'm seriously thinking petrol next.
Why?

4 cities looking to band diesels 2025
London - diesels not complying with EU6 to be charged everyday
general war on diesels that seems to be getting larger as time goes on.

Government years back stated that they wanted to reduce CO2 emissions and taxed cars accordingly, many people bought diesels as a result.
I can easily seeing that reverse now with tax on diesels going up substantially.

Ignoring all of the above, as regards the G30 I'd like the 530d . (I have a 530d now)
However if I take the above into account, I think going for the 540i makes sense so when I get round to buying the next 5, I will go a test drive on a 540i and see what it is like.

You also have to bear in mind that if you do purchase diesel, future rules introduced may make them unattractive and that will affect resale values.
Just my thoughts .

Summary, probably petrol next time.

Trouble is that the 540i is XDrive only here in the UK. Very bizarre and makes no sense - it was a niche enough seller as it is so why make it 4wd only?! It's RWD everywhere else.

So if you want a decent RWD Sport Saloon unfortunately the 530d is as good as you'll get now!

Indeed, which bumps up the price that bit more even if it is good.

Who knows that might change as we are just talking about the launch here and down the road (no pun intended!) , BMW UK may add more variation.Especially if "the war on diesels" escalates which in my opinion will in some form or other. Maybe we will see a switch from diesel to petrol especially if taxations is changed accordingly.
I'm looking time wise in 2019 most likely so still time for changes to occur in what gets offered.

Her in Norway, the G30 530i, 530d and 540i are all xDrive only.

You can get the 520d with RWD and xDrive.

Hi

My thoughts on the g30:

I think with all the government changes coming up I think there's still room for one more diesel car during the g30 era if you are a diesel buyer but after that shape is phased out it's definitely a future for hybrids. At that stage as said before by bmw 2030 is the cut off point for the combustion engine. Seeing that the 5er has a seven year shape cycle, the shape released in 2024 will be more hybrid inclined especially as eperformance such as 330e and 530e will be in its second incarnation. Also in 2024 government taxes for diesel and petrol engines will be a lot higher to deter us motorists.
Also these cars will have awd emphasis in 2024 with rwd as an expensive option on petrol or diesel cars on the last shape 5er going into 2030.

I will miss the economy of the diesel and the torque however these new hybrids are quick of the mark as well I hear.

So here's another little conundrum for the panel:

Change March 2017 with a big-ish chunk of negative equity......but.......have road tax for next few years of £150ish rather than £500 due to road tax changes, or

Wait til negative equity is gone/in VT territory and accept the ongoing costs of a premium vehicle?

The way I see it I can probably use man-maths to chabge my car earlier than I would do normally. :-)

As you'll only save a grand on road tax, the man-maths is going to have to be more like man-calculus.

You may have seen that Doctors are pushing to ban all diesels in London due to health concerns.
I'm no expert , perhaps someone with more technical expertise can answer.
Are diesel cars that comply with EU6 , are these considered clean enough or still concerns as regards this standard?
Is there a newer standard in the pipeline (EU7?) that would address the concerns.
I wonder if the general quality of the air in London is down to earlier generation diesels or perhaps heavier vehicles like buses and lorries.

When I do get the chance to try a 540i, I will be interested to see what the low down torque is like. I do like the way my current 530d feels effortless and the general low revving nature of the engine which seems to work well in real world driving.
Would I miss this going back to petrol? (I had a E39 530i msport previously) even though general refinement would be better.

I'm expecting it to be a quadratic equation...

Hi silo

If you buy the new five and it costs over £40k and if it is registered after April 17 it will also attract a supplemental charge of £310 per annum for the first five years. I don't know if this would be of any bearing to you.
Hope this helps

BMW are offering 9% off the new 5 Series already, without negotiation. Makes the man maths slightly easier!

I suspect they are factoring in the currently weak pound with the G30 prices. If it doesn't recover in the next 6 months they can reduce the 9% discount. This looks a lot better than increasing list prices.

This is what I was referring to. Basically if I was to change earlier, assuming a 3 year ownership cycle/pcp deal, I could offset the £930 extra over the next 3 years against my negative equity....

Man maths it is, but in all honesty, given the discounts available on the 6 series, I may well get a 640d before April.....

Hi silo

My thoughts exactly as this is going to be a new territory for dealerships and pcp customers as the switch over every time for a car costing £40k+ can work out quite expensive. Several point to considering,
will you always be looking for a pcp
are you looking to buy outright at any point
How long do you intend to hold on to your cars
Mileage you cover annually

If you are one for the first placing an order for the g30 do ensure that these costs of extra taxation can be covered by the dealership by some means of contribution or better valuation of your car to offset the costs.

Let me know your thoughts on this.
